I just ordered a WD 4TB Gold internal drive to be used to backup my C: drive. IT has been many years since I have done this and can't remember how to format and anything special I need to do since it is 4TB to make sure I can use all 4TB. Thanks.

It should come formatted and ready to go.

Thank you for your reply. Nothing I have to do to get it to recognize and use 4TB? I was reading that many times, out of the box the computer will only recognize 2TB

You never told us which OS you have.

Windows 10. And I am replacing an existing drive that only is visible when I restart the computer. After a little while either it doesn't appear in explorer or if the drive letter is there and I click on it I can't see any files in it. I am assuming it is a problem with the drive itself so I am just going to try replacing it.

I've not had problems with 4GB or smaller drives being recognized completely with W10 (or W11). I say plug it in and see what happens. If you do find it is not formatted or you don't see most of the 4GB (some will go to overhead), then follow foogoo's instructions - especially if you want to partition the drive.

Did the computer come with Windows 10 or did it come with Windows 7 and was upgraded to Windows 10?

The hardware for Windows 7 era computers have problems with anything over 2TB.

Pretty sure it came with Windows 10. I know for sure I ordered it with a 3TB internal drive to use as a backup drive which is the one currently in there that I am replacing with a 4TB

So I just put it in. I took out another drive that was in that slot and put this new one in. WD Gold 4TB. It doesn't recognize it. I am going to follow your directions but when I for mat it should it be NFTS?
