Installing a new Video Driver

I need to update the driver for my Sapphire ATi Radeon HD 2400 XT 256MB PCI-E video card to take full advantage of the OpenGL related features of Adobe CS4 (you would think I know what I am talking about at this point - but I don't) :)

I have downloaded the latest version of the driver and I have the instructions for installing it from the from the AMD web site, i.e.

    • Click on Start, then Control Panel, then go to Add/Remove Programs.
    • At the top of the list you should see several ATI entries. Select the entry entitled ATI Software Uninstall Utility, and click Change/Remove.
    • You will be prompted to restart your system once the uninstall is complete.
    • Once restarted, check the Add/Remove Programs list again for any remaining ATI software.
    • If any ATI software is still listed, click Change/Remove on those entries to uninstall each one individually. (there are three other entries - ATI Catalyst Control Centre, ATI Display Driver and ATI Parental Control and Encoder.

All OK so far (although not done it yet).

    • Next, please scroll through the list until you find an entry called DAO rolleyes
    • Select DAO, then Click Change/Remove to uninstall this program.

Problem is - there is no DAO entry to remove! :confused

Assuming this is not a problem do I simply follow the first instructions and then double click on the driver I have downloaded?

I have not downloaded the other stuff from their site - Catalyst Control Center and WDM Drivers. However the Catalyst Control Center appears in the Add/Remove list - so I presumably have it loaded at the moment although its size there appears to be a lot smaller than the difference between the driver download only (13.3 Mb ) and the full download (34.7 MB!).

And "WDM Drivers" ? What are these?

Am I likely to need any features from these?

Note that I do not play games, do video encoding etc. My main use is Photoshop (which is why I have the cheap card as until the latest version any old card would do) plus other 2D image related software.

I am running XP Pro (SP3)

I am a little nervous as I don't want to goose the system (and me) in the process. I would be very grateful if you could advise.

The WDM drivers are included in the full download (the 34.7mb file) and will be automatically installed. When uninstalling the old driver, there is usually an item listed in Add/Remove Programs called 'ATI Uninstall Utility' or something real close to that. If you select it and click 'Remove' it will uninstall all the ATI programs/software/drivers in one shot. Then reboot, run CCleaner on both your HD and registry to clean up any leftover entries, then install this ATI driver. The CCleaner step is more-or-less optional, but it's a good idea (it can't hurt; just be sure to make a registry backup when CCleaner asks). I did some quick research on DAO. Click this link or this link for more info about DAO. From what I can tell, it's primarily for older cards (but I may be wrong) and is related to the ATI MultiMedia Center (also known as MMC). Both the MMC and the DAO can be download from this link.

    I hope this helps!

It does - although still unsure if I need the whole thing or just the drivers. And why AMD think there will be a DAO entry in my Add/Remove list. :confused
