I am installing a slave drive on my system and haven't done this for a few years. I am reading all other posts and they are all saying I need an operating system on the slave. Do I need to install an o/s on both drives

Nope. You can use the slave drive purely as a data container, no need for an operating system.

    No, it shouldn't.

Do understand that Slave and Master drives apply only to EIDE (PATA) drives where you have up to 2 drives on a cable. If this second drive is a SATA drive, it attaches to its own cable. There are no Slave and Master settings for SATA devices.
