    hey all

i just bought a new DVD burner tonight and don't know how to install it.
it says in the owners manual that if it's the forth drive i'm installing there needs to be a special order.

um if anyone could help that would be great thank you.

    How many drives you running?
You can only have 4 (conventually)
    Primary Master
    Secondary Master
    Primary Slave
    Sec. Slave
4 connectors on the IDE cable(2 per) - (long usually flat ribbon cables)(kinda think duct tape in appearance)

So figure out where it goes and set the jumper (that nfo is in the instructions you got with the drive)
Like to help more but don't know what/how many drives you got and how they are configured.
HINT: watch boot up the drives are usually detected and listed there for you to see.. which ever one is blank is the one you need.

Primary Master is your main HDD
Primary Slave would usually be Second HDD
Secondary Master would be Rom 1
Secondary Slave would be Rom 2

if you have a rom already then the dvd rom will be Secondary Slave. So make sure the pin settings are on Slave and hooked up to the Mddle connector on the IDE cable.

i have three things currently hooked up
    1HDD
    2CDR
3DVDR this is the one i cant get working

i think it says i have to have the DVDR on it's own ide cable and have it in the master section

but that is hard to do because my ide cables dont bend like that im having some trouble

and what did you mention about setting up the jumper?
i don't know what the jumper is

maybe i should just get a pro to do it.

    but i don't wanna if i don't have to

    thanks all

read the manual.. there are usually pictures... jumpers are little 'plugs' that fit over pins to make an electronic connection.. they are usually on the back of the drive between the ide connector & power connector. The position of the jumper matters -MAster, SLave or CS (cable select)..
How are things hooked up? Are the HD & CD on the same IDE cable?
What/how is bios reporting them? What is master? what as Slave? Primary? Secondary?
If you can't find out you may need a 'pro'. Because with 3 drives (setting unknown) with 3 possible jumper settings = more variations than I can calculate right now.

    I did it!!

whoever mentioned the jumper before thank you!

i remember seeing something about the jumper in the manual i looked again and boom there it was.

turn off the pc changed the jumper over to the slave position and now it works thank you!! :)

but now i'm wondering if i should move the DVDR onto the primary slave and as of now it's free

i have the DVDR on the secondary slave position should i move it to the primary slave?

    will this make a difference?

    thanks again all
