    great!

i have an intel 82810 motherboard with onboard video and sound.

the internet connection will be through a D-Link fast ethernet card.

okay guys i've started the installation of FC6 and this is going to be ah, well, interesting . . .

i'm on the partitioning type page and i have a question.
there are two sections, the partition type and the hard drive i want to use.
since i'm a dweeb and don't know alot about fedora i'm choosing the default layout.
the second part has me confused, there are two selections both enclosed by square brackets.
the first selection is[*] the second selection is [hda], the [hda] is highlighted.
what is this? what is hda and *?
anyway i'm choosing hda because it is already highlighted but i honestly have no idea what i'm doing.

okay, on the next screen it says i've chosen to delete all data on dev/hda.
    what is dev/hda?
i'm choosing yes on the screen because i assume that dev/hda is my hard drive.

okay, it now says i don't have much memory, i believe i have 192 meg but not sure.
anyway it's saying that i need to turn on swap file immediately. i'm choosing yes.

the installation halted with an I/O error on my hard drive.
it might be because i have the HDD and CD drive on the same IDE cable.

okay, i got the write error fixed.
i'm stuck on the network configuration for eth0.
i've selected use dynamic IP configuration and it asks me for an IP address for the IPv4 feild.
i have absolutely no clue as what to put in there.

i've changed the setting to activate on boot.
now i'm stuck on the next screen misc. network settings.
    what's a gateway?
    what's a primary DNS?
    what's a secondary DNS?

i pressed enter without entering anything in the blanks.
after each entry it said my selection might cause me problems later.

i've selected all kinds of software to install and now i'm on the actual installation.
it said i will need all 5 of the fedora 6 CDs and i've got them all.
okay, i'm on the second CD of the 5 CD set and everything seems to be running smoothly so far.

installation complete but i cannot access the installation because i provide the wrong hostname/login/password.

this is the exact same problem i had with a previous installation.

Partioning, I wouldn't change, assuming your wanting to erase everything on hda. Gateway and dns are your internet connection info, which in most cases should be left to obtain automacitly.

PCLOS uses dnswrapper for our wireless connection, just choose the driver for the hardware by browsing mnt (mount I believe) and choosing CD (the installation disk) or hda (Windows installation C: drive), it's an .inf file for the Ativa usb wireless card, located in Windows files and on the software installation disk. Then it sets up the connection for me after I enter the code for the wireless router. The OS detects the connection via the Ethernet card automatically. PCLinuxOS uses grub to boot the system and when the system boots I have the choice of 4 Windows installations and two Linux installations to choose from. Linux was the default OS but changed default to WIndows in the grub files on the PCLOS installation, so if no OS is selected the pc boots Windows. TuneXP (Windows program) can show you all the pertinent information you will need for your internet connection, although I am sure it is available in Windows somewhere, as that is where the program gets it. PCLOS is Debian based and has the KDE desktop. Tried quite a few distros and decided on this one, and haven't regretted it yet. As far as partitioning, after a serious defrag (Perfect Disk 8.0, free to try for 30 days, and try again) I used half of a 120GB HDD (slave) that was resized by me during the Linux installation. Disk Manager in WIndows can see the partitions for the Linux installation, and knows they are healthy, but has no idea what type of files they are. Cool you are devoting a computer exclusively to Linux, I might try that with my laptop after I get accustomed to using it.

The title says Fedora 6, not PCLOS. Stay on topic, and help the poster.
