hi, I already have 2 SATA drives plugged in. I want to install an IDE hard drive, but I tried a few jumper settings, all of them didn't work (I get a screen with lots of 99 in the boot up).

is my jumper setting at fault or what?

most likely something in the BIOS.
firstly - if you are setting it to be slave (no jumpers on the pins), make sure that there are no other slaves on the IDE cable (eg CDROM)
same with if you are setting it as master (jumper on pins closest to IDE cable), make sure it isnt clashing with another master on the same IDE channel.

secondly - in the BIOS, most mobo's will automatically be set to boot from an IDE hard drive rather than SATAs if one is plugged in. go to boot options & make sure that your pc is trying to boot up from your original SATA boot drive

The above statements regarding jumper positions is kind of broad. Always check the drive label or the silkscreening on the drives controller for jumper positions. For example, on a Western Digital HDD, no jumper is Master, not slave.

When you tried to format it, did you see a choice to initiate it ?- I take it you are doing it from the management cnsole, disc management. It may need initiating, prior to format.

try downloading the WD disk test utility, make a boot disk & let that run to check for defects. the drive would have to be initialised to format it...

initialised? well I think it is: there is a drive letter next to it. I tried right-clicking and I didn't see initialise anywhere...

btw, the error message is: "windows was unable to complete the format"

Are you logeed on with Adminitrator priviledges, ?
If you click on the help button in the management console, and about Microsoft management console, there is a lot of information on hard-drives, there.

baklogic dude, you are my savior.

I used the Data Lifeguard Tools to format the drive, and it worked! (seems like the windows format sucks or something)

Well now it works, thank you very much.

edit: btw, how did you find all that information?

Hi Alarm, I thought it better to guide you there, as I could just have kept on giving you a method at a time, but as I spent many months on old hard drives, I know how it feels , when this does not work, or, that does not work.
In the end it made me lazy, and I use Hyperos, which used to use partition magic for loads of partitioning, and cloning of partitions, and all the major companies hard drive tools are on tap, - so I use them, when I have to.
The data lifeguard tool is god, isn't it.
Seagate (now has Maxtor under its wing), and has a tool that can be used within Windows for a load of hard disk uses- I used it a couple of times- its a good one to keep, too.- It is one that you have to go to seagate support to get. It also works on other hard drives, but as I only use Seagate, and lot of the old machines I have worked on use Maxtor, I have not had reason to test it, on other hard drives- so I led you to WD.
At Majorgeeks there are some very good technical bods, so , just keep coming back, there is always someone with that extra bit of knowledge. :wave
