My internal modem is not working in this newly reformatted system I installed Windows 98SE OS (what a surprise). Under the Device Manager tab there's question marks in front of PCI Communication Device (& the sound card). I located several modem drivers, downloaded them to floppy, created a New Folder on my Desktop & try one by one first putting in & then openning each drivers modem file but I get lost somewhere in the steps. Is anyone good enough to describe the steps in detail cause I'm really a newbie at this. I get as far as the "Then click the "Update Driver" button. A dialog box will walk you through the process. Choose "Display a list of drivers..." then choose the "Have Disk" button & use the dialog box to find the "driver files" folder you created on your desktop. Choose the .INF" file in that folder & click OK. First, I never see a".INF" file whenever I open any of the driver files be it a .exe or a .zip file! Furthermore, when that box opens up with ".INF" on the left side, & the folder on the right where you put the drop down files in (hope you know what I mean), I can never get it right. Can you please take me through this??
Oh and I'm also looking for a program on this site that will help me recover broken downloads(If I'm out of line with this, I'll post somewhere else)

Hmm, your updating your drivers properly. An executeable may often install the drivers so its automatic. If I knew the modem make or model, one of us could locate it and be sure it is viewable.

This may help you, Windows might be hiding the file on you, I think 98 did this: Using Windows Explorer, browse to the folder the inf is going to be placed and choose tools\folder options. Under the view tab, uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" and "show hidden files and folders" if that does not work. If you cant find it, then it is probably something added for ME or XP.

I may or may not have the right drivers for the modem. However it's the process I'm not sure of. I want to be able to reproduce my steps for any drivers I want to install. Can you go through the process from the point I left off on my first post??
By the way there's a thing sticking up on the modem that says "Atech ATS-256" & those are the drivers I'm trying but the chip says PCTEL.

I have the correct drivers installed for the PCTel HSP Micro Modem 56. Got them from the Conexant website. Checked the Diagnostics tab & found the modem listed with AT commands & responses. However I still can't dial-up my ISP. Think it's got to do with the Network Connections tab. Although I do have the "Network Neighborhoods" icon located on my Desktop. I already installed my ISP installation software. I saw it right next to the "Add A New Connection" folder. Can you take me thru the steps I need to get my connection complete? I'm a newbie at this.
