    Hi all!
Hoping for some help with big problems but will understand if you can't respond due to lack of information on my part. I am moving (trying to) a modem out of an old computer (Thunderlink fax/Data Internal Modem 56K - V1456VQH-R5) into another computer which I won and have basically no information on - no manuals or anything. What I do know is that the new one is an IBM PC 300PL model running Windows 98SE (just upgraded from Win98 standard edition). I am getting various errors as follows: 1162 Configuration change has occurred & 162 Configuration change has occurred. PXE M04 - Initializing network boot utilizing 18th interrupt and PXE E61 - Media test error, check cable errors.
What I did to deserve these errors:
I removed a card (Madge™ Networks Smart 16/4 PCI Ringnode - I have no idea what this card does) in order to get to an empty place to plug in the modem. I then plugged in the modem.
With the modem in place (with or without the Madge card) I get the first 2 errors which basically means the computer can't find the operating system. I did check to make sure all the cables etc were solidly plugged in and the cards are seated completely. If I remove the modem (with or without the other card) the operating system goes back to work but still gives me that PXE M04 notice. I have tried moving the card(s) to different slots with no change in result. If anyone can clue me in to a solution I will be most grateful!
    Thanks

That 's mean you get a bad card. Looking for a new one.

Are you saying the card itself is no good or that maybe it's not compatible in the newer machine? It worked fine in the old Compaq...
    Thanks

Try reseting the Bios, once off take the motherboard battery out for a few mins then replace.... error PXE61 can be a linked to a wrong setting in the bios or can be a failing HD.

PXE M04 = network card, once bios is reset, enter the bios and check to see that the network card is not in the Boot List, if it is remove or disable it from booting.

(Madge™ Networks Smart 16/4 PCI Ringnode) is a networks card so tell us is there any lan cabe (RJ45) plug in it?

when you put it into new computer, you can log in OS and you see some error mesages, right ? did you see any question marks or exclamation marks in device driver ? If you see that mean drivers have not been install or hardware conflict and you can fix it by installing or changing memory address.

If your computer boot from networks card so you should put it the first right PCi slot and restart the computer
if error messages appear again you have to know how to configure networks card bios or ask for IT's help

Okay - will try to answer you all at once:
Thanks by the way for the information on what that Madge card is!! There is an RJ45 connection in the card but no cable hooked up - this used to be a company computer and was run on a network. Now a stand alone and not on any network...
When the card is in there by itself no problem (other than the minor annoyance of the PXE message which I can live with). When I put in the modem card I can't get to the operating system. I haven't installed the software/drivers for the modem yet as I have never gotten to the point of the OS recognizing the hardware.
Now, as for switching the order of the cards: there are 5 PCI expansion slots - two short, three long - the short ones to the left. The network card will fit either slot - the modem will only fit the long slots. Using the 2 long slots for both cards is not an option due to the way the they are built - the connections plate (or whatever you call them) hang right on the networks card and hang left on the modem card. I can't put the networks card in the first slot as it wouldn't fit (no opening for the connections plate). Hope I am being coherent...
Am I screwed? Thanks again for your support!
