This doesn't happen to be a Winmodem? (Note that Winmodem isn't a brand, it's a type of modem) Winmodems generally are cheaper because some of the processing needed for the connection is handled by Windows - which means if there is no Windows, there is no connection. Since it seems that even with the packages Dapper Dan asked to install didn't help, you may want to research whether it is a Winmodem or not. If you list the make and model, you, I, or someone else can research the issue, but be aware that I may not have time to right away, it may take a few days to a week, max.

Winmodems are generally cheaper than pure hardware modems, because they don't need as much hardware or software to get them working.

    Got driver?

I'm prob way off base, but for my modem- I went to Ubuntu's site using Windows, did a search- found the approp driver package- copied it to disc- rebooted in Ubuntu & isntalled the driver.

I think i many have found something about the modem... if this is not what we are looking for let me know. In Modem properties the modem is titled "TOSHIBA Software Modem" and it is attached to COM3.
    Under Driver details:
    Driver Provider: Agere
    Driver Date: 11/28/2006
    Driver Version: 2.1.77.0
Digital Signer: microsoft windows hardware compatibility publish

    Driver files: (Provider: Agere Systems)
    C:\Windows\agrsmdel.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\agrscoin.dll
    C:\Windows\system32\ agrsmsvc.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\AGRSM.sys
    C:\Windows\system32\drivers\modem.sys

    Hardware Ids:
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_02&VEN_11C1&DEV_1040&SUBSYS_11790001&REV_1002

Some of this may be useless but I didnt know what to put so i put as much as i could.

It does look like the Agere modem you have is a software modem, but you are in luck. Not only may the link provided by pondhopper look promising for you, I've also found a few others.

Hopefully at least one of these links will work for you. The easiest ways to get the driver files to the linux install is either via a FAT16/32 partition on your hard drive, USB memory stick, or CD/DVD..

Post back if you have install issues, or if it's working :)

rayburke, please start a new thread. It is bad forum ettiquette to resurrect an old thread and also to post a problem in a thread someone else started (this is known as hijacking a thread).
Simply copy your post, click on new thread at the top or bottom of the linux section, add a title like modem and kubuntu, then paste your post.
