Not nessasarily but it does help to keep memory matched, the speed of the ram is important tho, more so for the fact that if you have a stick of PC2100 and the new ram is PC2700 the new stick will only run at the speed of the slower stick...

as to installing them, you will need to switch off your PC and open up the side ( BE careful of static discharge ) a nice guide to help you http://www.kingston.com/tools/umg/umg07.asp

That is a very nice guide to help you... in additon to the speed issue "Halo" brought up you should also make sure your not going to exceed your motherboards RAM capacity. This can be found on spec sheets for your specific motherboard or if you have a user manual for the computer or motherboard. Nowadays 1 GB of RAM is very doable so you should be OK as long as it's not to old of a computer. However, if the computer CAME with a stick of 512 you should really be ok... but just something to keep in mind that every motherboard does have a max capacity for RAM... so as much as we'd all like to we just can't keep throwing more ram in there lol
