Installing Ms Office 2k

    Hi all-
I am new here. I just retired after a 25+ year career in radio & television. I've done marketing for a Fortune 500 company, so if anyone needs free help in those areas, I'm your guy. Happy St. Patrick's Day to those who celebrate it!

Question: I installed MS Office 2000 in my two desktop. I bought the software on Ebay, new. It worked perfectly. On my laptop it doesn't work (all 3 use Windows 10). My error message says that I need to install IIS 4.0. I can't seem to find it so I thought I'd reach out for suggestions.

    Thanks!

Thanks, G1! I tried that but MS said I needed IIS 10 on my laptop. So I tried to download IIS 10 on it, but MS said I needed IIS 4.0 first. I feel as though I am in a maze! If you can help me further, please advize...

Assuming you are using a 64 bit system, GermanOne provided you with the correct link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10317

This is the download for Internet Information Services (IIS) 4.0. However... I DID notice a somewhat unorthodox set of installation instructions. Expand said 'Installation Instructions' on the website provided and follow the steps:

Click the Download button on this page to start the download, then do one of the following:
    • To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
    • To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.

Installing this package requires full administrative permissions. This is best accomplished using one of two methods:
    • Log in to your computer using the local "administrator" account before installation.
    • Use the Command Prompt:
      • Copy the download to your computer (see above)
      • Log on to your computer using an account with administrator privileges
      • Click the Windows Start button
      • In the "Search for Programs and Features" box on the Start menu, type "Command Prompt"
      • Right-click on the Command Prompt program in the search results
      • Select Run as administrator
      • In the Command Prompt windows that opens, type the command listed below to run the installation:

        msiexec /i IISMedia64.msi

Note: The above steps are required because the User Account Control (UAC) security component in the Windows operating system will prevent the installation of IIS modules by non-administrators. For more information about UAC, please see the following documentation:

I appreciate the help, but I'm still stuck. The only IIS that the laptop is 10.0. That only gave me a "1919" error code instead the "1908" I got before...

Interesting. I still use Office 2003 on Win10 without any problems, not even with installation problems.

Yeah, MS says even 2003 is incompatible....think they are trying to sell the latest Office?

"All three versions started setup nicely with exception for Office 2000 setup which presented an error message during the install:

Error 1904. I promptly clicked Ignore a couple times and setup completed successfully."

Have you tried installing in compatibility mode?

I'm having a somewhat similar issue. Office2k (specifically WinWord) worked GREAT on a new computer with win10 factory installed... until about 6 months ago (september-october timeframe).

I had "clicked ignore" through the 4 DLL file warning messages, then force-registered them via elevated command, using cd c:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32 "total path to the stinkin file"

Word worked fine.... For a while.

Now, after less than a paragraph of typestrokes, it freezes and has to be closed via TaskManager; it can't even be closed by clicking the upper-right X on the window.

I have tried to use Office365 or whatever it's currently called. (You know, the little "card" you buy at your local electronix shop, and you scratch off a strip of stuff, then type that number in, your computer then spends 2 days at rural internet speeds downloading the program... You all know the approximate drill.)

I hate it, I can't use it, it's seriously worse than win10 itself (which I loathe for several reasons, the primary one being the lack of color and font size personalization but that's a separate rant).

Does anyone know ANY way to force Word2k to work?

Is it remotely possible that I can force Win10 to roll back to a pre-October 2018 version, and then use "StopUpdates" or something to... well, stop them? Or will that even work?

Honestly, I'm not tech-phobic. I love gadgets. I love new stuff. I thought I'd adore win10, and to be fair, I do -- on the laptop. But it's a horrific nightmare on the PC, and trying to earn a living without Word2k is.... not happening. I've resorted to working in Notepad, no joke... and then formatting things in Word, and praying to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that the program will refrain from crashing long enough to save the formatted doc.

Seriously, can anyone help before I go from a cranky old lady to a CRAZY cranky old lady?

And if the Geek Gods believe I should start my own thread, say so and I'll gladly do that.

    Thanks!

    Why don't you use WordPad?
Also look at Writer which is included with Libre Office and Apache OpenOffice.

    ^^ What he said...
WordPad is good for those who don't want to do a lot of formatting. LibreOffice is for those who want to get as close to Word as possible but don't want to buy the Word program.
And I don't blame them...

Thanks for the suggestions, Eldon and skeezix. Very much appreciated.

The trouble is, I do in fact, do a lot of formatting, since I'm a novelist. I've checked into Libre, but the screen shots seem to indicate it's set up like Office365, with ribbon garbage and "left pane" nonsense. However, if I'm reading it right, it IS more customize-able than current versions of Office? Or am I still confused?

    Yes.
Try Apache OpenOffice with a good ol' fashion toolbar interface. :)
Or Kingsoft Office that has the option of both (Toolbar & Ribbon).

Boy I hear you there! I bought Word 2016, saw the ribbon, and then uninstalled Word 2016. Word 2000 works just fine for me on my Windows 10 machine.

Can't really help you with LibreOffice because I only use it when Word 2000 stops working (not that it really has though).

    @the skeezix,
Do you have the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed?

You could move away from MS Office and try LibreOffice.

It'll read and write Office formats and many older ones, like Lotus WP - remember them...

I've been running OpenOffice, then LibraOffice for around 10 years. Apart from handling of Microsoft PowerPoint, its fine.
If, however, lack of more native editing for PowerPoint is a deal breaker.... then you may need to continue the hunt for a solution.

    LibraOffice runs on most Windows.

    Good luck !

    @Eldon
No, I didn't install any compatibility packs. Since I retired 12 years ago, I don't think I need them.
BUT - will the service pack you referenced work for a Word 2000 installation on a Win 10 computer?

The Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3 (SP3) is for MS Office 2000, 2002 & 2003.
It allows the user to open, edit and save the newer formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx).
I'm not sure if it will install in Windows 10, though it's worth a try.
