installing new dial up modem? tweaks?

my old modem hasnt been working. its a Lucent win modem. i recently bought a new modem, US Robotics.
what steps do i go through to go from the old modem to the new modem?
maybe something like this..

1- add/remove programs, remove old modem
2- physically take out old modem
3- physically put in new modem
4- use CD to install new modem

is it that simple?

plus are there any type of tweaks or settings that will make my dial up modem better? i currently only get online at 24.6 kbps.
