Ok, a few months ago I purchased a new computer that came with McAfee Antivirus/Firewall. My subscription ran out. I've previously always used free firewalls and antivirus cause they tended to be less resource intensive anyway. I removed McAfee and installed Avira AV and now I'm trying to install a Firewall but I'm having some problems. I've gone through nearly everyone of the suggested free Firewalls on Chaslangs FAQ in the Malware Removal forum and none are compatible. For example, when I try to install Comodo, I extract the files, get to the part where it says "Select the language" and then after selecting I get a message that says "This installation does not support target platform." I get similar messages with the others. Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    Hi Chairman Wood.

First, you need to supply a little more info. such as operating system version (Windows?) and whether it is 32bit or 64bit.

Also, another very good free antivirus is Avast! Free Edition

The error message can not properly be interpreted if the platform has not been identified.

Windows 7, 64 bit. Is that enough information? Can I help with anything else?

    Thank you

    ok thank you!

"7. Under the My Protection Products section, select the subscription from which you would like a license released.
    8. Find the computer you want to deactivate and click Deactivate.
9.If you selected this machine in error, click Cancel. Otherwise click Deactivate to proceed."

I cannot seem to deactivate my computer because the license is already expired. I assume I can just continue as it is in effect, deactivated?

Ok, I have run this and tried installing a firewall again, still getting the same messages but I think that can be expected due to the platform thing.

    Thank you.

Edit: Ok, sorry it didn't help. Good luck :)

At the beginning of those instructions it says:
    You have already uninstalled McAfee:
Those instructions you quote are only for when you "cannot successfully uninstall"
Since McAfee has been uninstalled all you need to do now is run the McAfee Removal tool to clean up any leftovers of McAfee that might be creating this problem.

    Thank you MadMal,

I have run the McAfee removal tool and I'm still experiencing the same problem of the error message about the platform when I tried to install the Comodo Firewall. Is there any other information I can provide?

Hiya. I use Windows 7 64 bit, and have been using Private Firewall for over a year now, and I am happy with it. If you aren't dead set on Comodo Firewall, I would suggest Private Firewall.

Since you have tried many firewalls with the same result I have to ask, are you sure you are downloading the 64Bit version?
If you download Comodo Firewall from MajorGeeks you should click on 64Bit @Authors Site

Not dead set it just was at the top of the list of the suggested firewalls in the malware forum. I got it working now but I would have used your suggestion had I not, thanks though!
