I have a Acer aspire 5517 laptop. It is about 1 yr old. The hd died in it, so I have purchased the same hd to replace the old one. The old lap top had windows 7 installed, in the hd, but of course I do not have windows 7 disc. I do have a windows xp boot disc.

So I exchanged the old hd with new hd, and tried to boot it up with windows xp. I get the blue screen off death lol. The warning states a problem has been detected and windows has b4een shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen..... goes on to say check computer for viruses, remove any new hd (do'h) check to make sure it is properly config and terminated. Run chkdsk for hd corruption.

Well I am sure it is not a virus, and I do not know how to run chkdsk, since I have no operating disk, and I do not know if it is properly configed. Any suggestions on how I should proceed? Is it because of windows xp?

I would contact Acer and ask whether they can send you a recovery disc. They may charge a fee but the cost should be very low. I know HP will send recovery/system discs for many models of HP and Compaq computers; for a specific computer about which I called them, the charge would have been less than $20 including shipping.

By the way, in the future, make your own recovery discs. Surely, your Acer had a recovery partition on the hard drive and the user is supposed to create a recovery disc on DVD from that recovery partition. This way, you would have a recovery disc to use for installing Windows and device drivers on a new hard drive.

Agreed with usafv about the recovery disks.

Most likely the reason for the blue screens and warnings is that the hard drive is probably a SATA drive, and XP does not carry native SATA support.

    Hey - it's all in a day's work. ;)

Do try to get the Acer recovery disk(s) - it's been my experience that most OEMs will comply with support requests in order to retain you as a customer.

    Good luck! :major
