Installing new nvidia driver

    Hi,
I have a sony vaio 32 bit laptop.
I`m getting bsod at every startup. I recently updated all the drivers because I was getting random crashes but not due to this driver. The blue screen view is telling me it`s the nvidia driver causing the crashes. Although when I try to upgrade, my laptop tells me I have the latest version, so i`m ignoring that.

I`m not good with repairs and a little nervous about doing the wrong thing and making it worse, so my question is: Will I be able to uninstall and install the new nvidia driver without any problems as I can only run in safe mode with networking and some things won`t download and others will?

If this info is needed it is the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600. File version 7.15.10.9746

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Welcome peachypear :)

The Beta nVidia driver here is the latest listed (and judging by the release date, the last version - until W8 arrives?) but the notes say:
So that looks like it may be a last resort, try Sony Support/Drivers first.

If you have any *.dmps in your Windows\Minidumps folder, you can copy the latest few to your Desktop, zip and attach them, I'll try to check through them for further clues as to the problem.

Thanks for the advice. I`m sorry to have to admit how rubbish I am at the technical stuff, I can`t even copy these files to show you :-o, i`m following the instructions but they wont copy to desktop. Either i`m doing it wrong or it just wont do certain stuff in safemode with networking, which is all I can get at the moment. Also I only have freezip and I havn`t needed to use it before, the instructions i`m following don`t seem to do what they say.

I had a look on the Sony support and they are suggesting a different version for my model, (file version 7.15.10.9813a), it gives full steps on how to install, so i`m still a little nervous as I have had trouble downloading some stuff in safe mode with networking over the last few weeks (i`ve tried loads of diagnostic stuff to get to this point) and i`m just worried I will render the laptop totally useless!
    Ah well, here goes..

Right click the latest *.dmp files and choose Copy then switch to your Desktop, right-click a blank area and choose Paste.

I installed the new driver 7.15.10.9813 but the laptop is crashing just as before and I can still only use safe mode.
Sorry for delay in posting back, long shifts at work in between.

The first black screens on start up have broken vertical green lines on and my laptop did get very hot at one point previously so I don`t know if there is some damage there.

You need to uninstall the old drivers before you install the new one , you could download this tool

    http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

using in mormal mode and afterwards in safe mode to clean up completely the old rubbish driver , after that download and install the correct driver !! :)

Go with Falconattack's suggestion of using DriverSweeper to remove the current drivers, the nvlddmkm.sys is flagged as being corrupt:

Then reinstall the latest drivers you have.

Carrona.org lists the following as reasons for the 0x50 BSOD:
Your comment about "broken vertical green lines" might point to the VRAM on the graphics card being faulty. If you can create a MemTest CD and boot from it to test the memory, if there are any errors, you'll need to deal with that before looking at software/drivers.

Thanks guys. I did uninstall the old nvidia driver first but I will take some time to digest what you have said and try it. Work becons again....

    Hello,
You might also want to look at updating the Chipset software. Your computer uses the 945pm chipset. You can try installing it. If it is not needed, it will not install.

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...=IntelĀ®+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility

You can go here and will automatically detect if you have the latest.

    Hi

I tried updating the chipset and ran memtest also. Straight after I couldn`t get it to start at all for 2 days, even in safe mode so took it in to my local shop. They tested it and say that its the chip on the motherboard and not worth replacing. They think it could be replaced but will cost too much and I may as well buy a cheap laptop for not much more. I`ve just got it started in safe mode with n after trying for half an hour. It wanted to run a diskcheck then decided it would start.
