ok i and upgradeing a compaq deskpro from a celeron 500mhz to a celeron 900mhz and was wondering if there is anything i should be worried about because i never done this befor i know how to take the old one out and put a new one in but what do? do i edit the bios? what do i do?

i tried to remove a celeron from a compaq presario and found it impossible to remove the heatsink so I just bought a new mobo and case

though you need a demagnetized screwdriver and press down on the heatsink clip and that should undo it(this is as far as I got with my compaq as the hsf clips just wouldn't unfasten) .... then remove the heatsink ... then lift this bar on the side of the CPUs socket ... you then want to carefully remove the CPU ... to put in the new one ... make sure that the bar is lifted and match the new CPU into the socket ... there should be a pin missing at one corner ... you want to match that up with the missing pin hole in the socket ... then simply drop it in the socket ... there is a reason they are called ZIFs(zero insertion force) because you do not force the CPU into the socket ... then close the bar ... spread a thin coat of TIM (arctic silver is recommended but not necessary) ... place the heatsink back onto the new CPU ... attach the clips and you're done

you could probably find a better explanation with pictures if you search google

I'm assuming you are using a socket 370 celeron ... if you are using slot 1(a??) it's different because they are cards and i've never done that ... and **make sure you ground yourself during this operation** ... static electricity can fry your mobo and you don't want that

you said only one pin missing it is missing 2 you can say. its a (celeron A)
i dont have to do anything to the bios?

assuming the new CPU is compatible it should automatically detect the new CPU ... I can't think of a reason you'd need to change anything in the BIOS ... also is your celeron slot 1 or is it a 370?

the only thing I'd worry about is if your mainboard can handle 900mhz. well actually not to worry, all that would happen is you'd have to run your cpu at a lower speed, won't hurt but obviously annoying :)

to my knowledge all celerons are socket connected. haven't seen one slotted one.

since it's no major update you should just have to replace the cpu, the rest should go automatically. try it, and if the cpu speed is not at what it's suppose to be, go into bios and see if you have a cpu speed setting. if so then change the multiplier until you have the correct speed. (should be 100mhz fsb on those celerons, then your multiplier should be at 9x, IF your mobo can go that high, if not just set it as high as it will go)

if you don't have the software speed setting in bios you need to get hold of a mobo manual. try googling and you should find one. it should say there how you set speed hardware wise using jumpers.

edit: hmm thinking about it, isn't it 66mhz fsb om those celerons..? well in that case just recount the multiplier (500 / 66 = 7,57... hmm... no it can't be. it must be a 100mhz fsb)
