Installing slave drive

I had a computer that was running ME on it. It has died. (I'm pretty sure the motherboard is fried.)I want to recover my files from the hard drive, but the only other computer I have access to right now is running 98.
I went ahead and installed the ME drive as slave, but its not working.
I didn't mess with the jumpers on the 98 drive (it is already set to master-I checked) but I set the me drive to slave

Heres the rest of the process I followed
    http://www.cybertechhelp.com/tutorial/article/how-install-slave-hard-drive-win98

Everything went exactly as the tutorial said, but no new drive is listed in "my computer." But the bios is seeing it and AIDA even saw that it was there. So any thoughts on what I may have done wrong? Or what I can do to fix this? It's driving me crazy!!

If I recall, 98 will not see a ME drive, due to ME was the predecessor to XP (don't ask my why Microsoft did this, they screwed up when they came out with Dos4.x). You would be able to acess with a XP drive.

As long as the 1st drive on the Primary IDE is set as Master, and the 2nd drive is set as Slave, and the Bios sees the Master and Slave appropiate, and is set in Boot options to Boot the Master 1st, you should be able to boot.

Now the easier way would be to boot with the ME drive as Master, and set the 98 drive as Slave, and transfer files that way.

I agree, it's probably better to simply boot the other computer to ME, and transfer that way. Doing it the other way is a fairly time consuming process if all you've got access to is 98. If you were to take it to an XP machine, it'd be far easier to turn it into a USB external drive, and connect that way.

I tried to just run the ME drive w/out the 98 drive and it comes up with the message no operating system. Does that mean the drive is wiped out?

Boot with a Knoppix LiveCD, and look to see if there is any Partition info on this drive, or if you can browse the drive? It is possible that the drive (on board controller card) may of gotten screwed up when the motherboard was fried.

I just had a duh moment. I decided I should check mycomputer-properties and there is an exclamation on the
    Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
When I click on thats properties it says
"This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)"
When I try to update the driver it says the best driver is already installed. Could this be the problem? and if so (or even if not) how do I fix this?
And I'm not sure what Knoppix LiveCD is or how to use it.

Double check the jumpers on the drive, along with the Bios settings to make sure that they are correct before booting the system again.

I double checked the jumpers and settings last night when I tried to run just the ME drive. And as far as I can tell the bios settings are correct also. Is there something special I should be looking for? Does anyone know what the !!! after the drive listing in the bios means or the error with primary IDE controller means?
    Thanks for all your help

Drive is most likely dead. Try another cable, and just the drive itself in a computer, and set the jumper as Single Drive or Master.

I'll get another cable from work tomorrow.
And not that I doubt your knowledge I just don't understand how it can be dead if the bios can read everything about it that it can on the 98 drive.
Probably it's just that I don't want it to be dead, but heres what it says in bios about the drive and if I'm beating a dead horse tell me to shut up and go away :) I will.

I am like you, try the new cable, and if you can, which this has worked for me, pull the battery for the Bios with the unit powered down, wait aprx 1min, put the battery back in, go into the Bios to get it to set everything, and then Save the settings. Hopefully with the new cable, we can get somewhere (make sure it is a 80pin cable, not 40pin (more wires, on cable).

Also make sure the Bios is set for Auto on the Drive that we are working for, due to sometimes the Bios will retain old settings and not reset when new devices are installed.

It's not clear to me which of the two drives you're booting from.

If the Windows 98 drive is your primary and the ME drive is the secondary, your system will boot Windows 98 (if the drive is properly jumpered and the cable is good, etc.). The BIOS will see the ME drive as D:, but Windows 98 won't be able to read it.

You may be able to instruct your BIOS to boot from the secondary drive, but that's not a default setting if it's available at all.

Not wishing to dispute or question anyones advice, but I thought that ME was DOS based like Win98 and used the FAT 32 file system. If I'm in error and NTFS was offered on ME, someone please tell me and I'll go hide in a corner for a while.

ME is a Fat32 based system, but they started to implement some items that are in XP in ME. Microsoft has done this with Dos4.x, where they used a OS for a test bed for new technologies, and ended up creating a problem.
