Installing Sound card problem

Running win98se on an older computer.

Bought a CMI-8738 sound card. It is showing up on my device manageras working properly, but that's it. No icon in my tray, the playback on my windows sound choices window is greyed out, and under multimedia there are no playback devices listed. I went into the driver and app. disk that came with the card, and tried to install from there. I hit the mixer button, the cd spins a bit, but nothing happens. I even copied that file to my HD & it still doesn't do anything. The card SAYS it is win98se compatible. Any ideas??? In the files under app on w98se it says the app. is in the winme file so I tried getting it from there, but that didn't help either. Why don't they just SAY "don't buy this for win98se unlees you have plenty of extra hair to lose because you'll be Pulling it out! The Cmi site is totally worthless (as far as I have seen) No way to contact them, and found nothing about installing or troubleshooting... ANy help will be greatly appreciated! Lisa

 

Have you disabled your motherboards onboard sound? You can do this by going into your BIOS (check your users manual) and read through it a bit, It should be under Integrated Peripherals, just go down to Onboard audio/sound controller, and choose disabled. NOTE : It probably WONT just say Onboard audio/sound controller it will probably say the name of the controller. Mine would be Onboard AC97 Audio controller.

Do you know what motherboard you have?

 

Super o motherboard. There was another audio device listed in the device manager that I keep removing--- & it keeps coming back... I wondered where it was coming from!

This was a hand me down computer for the kids... no paperwork, disks or anything with it... If you can get me into bios I should be able to figure it out (I think).....

 

Got in. No audio listed in bios. Everything else IS disabled. One thing was on AUTO --- FDC F-- something... can't remember what it was. Still no luck
