OK so I'm back and finally have time to work on the hard drive and get to use my computer again. Looking at upgrading to SSD. Existing drive is Barracuda ST3120026AS. There is Kingston 480GB on sale locally. It's 2.5 inch so I'm told needs an adapter. Is that adapter just for mounting? Will the existing SATA cable not work? So far searches in web says the cable should work. It appears the "adapter" is just for mounting.

i would tend to agree with that. the adapter lets you mount the 2.5 SSD in a 3.5 hard drive bay.
and the SATA cables will work just fine. good luck with it.

So it's been awhile. The SSD finally arrived and it's installed. Then a bit of hiatus because of a bug I picked up somewhere. Put my out of commission for a week. the physical mounting was easy. Just made a small bracket mounted into an old floppy drive. That SSD is lighter than the packaging itself!!!

Seems these changes never go without a hitch or two. Forgot to allocate the extra space when I did a clone with Macrium but got that fixed with Disk Management. Lots more space on C: drive now.

Next problem was booting up from the wrong drive. I have XP installed (which I never use) on another drive be darned if I could make the bios remember the preferred drive so in desperation I physically moved the cables. We're now running on Win 7.

    Thanks for all input.
