Installing Sun Java

As recommended, I am trying to remove Microsoft Java and install Sun Java.
I didn't have any problems removing Microsoft Java, but when trying to install Sun Java I get the attached message. Can you help?

I an running Windows XP.

The JRE bootstrap installer uses the systems Internet Connection setttings to connect to the web for downloading extra files. If you are behind a firewall and require proxy settings, make sure the proxy settings in Internet Options/Internet Properties are set up properly (Start->Control Panel->Internet Options/Internet Properties->Connections->LAN Settings)

 

The attached screen capture must be the screen you are talking about.
What do I do from here?

If you can connect okay to the web, there is probably nothing wrong with your settings, regardless of whether you are behind a proxy server or not.

The easiest way is to try a Manual Installation rather than play with your settings.

 

The screen capture I posted is what comes up when I'm trying to do a manual installation. How do I get around it?

 

I've never seen this error with a manual install and can't think of a reason why it would even require an internet connection to install.

I've installed it on machines that aren't even connected.

The only thing I can think of is that you aren't downloading the complete program, but an installer that then uses the internet to connect to download the rest.

Have you tried the site I listed above, how large is this file you are trying to install and what is it's name?

 

Well, I went back and did the regular download (not manual download) and it appears that it worked! I confirmed installation too...see attached confirmation from Sun Java.

What does this stuff this Java stuff do for me anyway??

NOTE: I had to compress this to a .zip file due to file extension.

JAVA is a trademark used for a programming language designed to develop applications, especially ones for the Internet, that can operate on different platforms. An example is Yahoo Games, all those run on JAVA.
