It's a long story, but my rear panel USB ports do not have drivers installed. I 've been to device manager and tried to update the drivers but get an error messgae saying 'access denied'. Everything OK in BIOS and I've tweaked the registry permissions I think to give full control on the hardware.

Sorry, a bit hasty - called for dinner. XP home, SP2. I just got a new motherboard as the last one blew up and was installed by a friend. Everything else works OK. Don't know the make of the motherboard, but it does sound like a permissions problem. What else do you need to know ? Listed in the device manager

I assume you are using an administrator account, and not a limited account?

I assume you have already tried going into device manager, and removing all of your USB devices, then rebooting?

Tried everything. I removed the drivers and then rebooted and then tried to reinstall them. I disabled them in BIOS and rebooted and then re-enabled them. Started Xp and got the add new hardware wizard. Instal failed with msge that there is a problem with the installation and the magic words 'access denied'. I assumed there was something wrong in the registry, but don't like to play too much. I adjusted the permissions so that admin and system have full control and read control. I'm not an expert in the registry, but for a lot of the listings I see only users 'everyone and system - no administrator.

Have you tried a repair installation of XP?

Didn't work. Can you think of why I shouldn't just buy a 4 port USB pci card and install that to cut my losses ?
