..... and the keyboard is different from a US keyboard. The top row of letters is:
Q W E R T Z U I O P and a U with two dots over it. The second row of letters is the same but on the right end, it has an O with two dots and an A with two dots. The bottom row is normal except there's a Y where the Z would normally be. The shift symbols are in different places too: shift + 2 prints a quote " instead of the circle-a thingy @ and there's some other differences. How is this going to effect the Vista install? I plan on formatting and loading clean, but I'm wondering about this keyboard difference....

    Hi dlb

If you pick the location as UK on install then the keyboard layout will be set right, although as your in USA time zone will be different, So once loaded, goto Contol Panel > Clock Language and Regions setting and set KB to UK English

    Nope

SORRY...... Should have 100% looked at the layout you typed so no will have to set to German KB and maybe wise to just on install set the location and timezone to Germany.

Yeah.... I just went to Wikipedia and found out that it is, indeed, a German layout. I probably should have done a bit of research before I posted. The previous Vista install crashes to GSOD (German Screen Of Death) and I can't read a word of it. She said that it's an error that says something about 'contact your system administrator'. The only thing I can read is the file name ntoskrnl.sys or maybe it was a .exe. I don't remember....

Oh, just thought of something else, did the customer have a localised version of Vista installed? If they did, then will need to re-install it once home as it has components for users home langauges, menus and layouts etc, the US English should work, with Keyboard change to German layout to get them by.

Ultimate has the Multi User Interface packs, once winupdate doen for the ultimate extras.

Can you not try a repair first, with your Vista DVD. Better would be if you have MSDN access to grab the German localised version.

It's not Ultimate... it's Home Premium. I've already started the process but I did not format. She said I could format as she had everything backed up, and she will reload back to German when she gets home. I did try the repair, and Vista said it found an install and would rename it to Windows.OLD. I'm on a real, real short timetable with this so I'm not going to do much more than I need to (and she's real, real, real tight with the purse strings and is not willing to pay for much of anything). So I'm just going to get it to a Vista desktop with a format, install the drivers, test it thoroughly, and call it done. She knows that the German will be gone and it will be in English and she's OK with it....
