It appears my service pack 3 no longer is supported and was wondering the difficulties of installing Vista over XP?

Why do you say XP SP3 is no longer supported? MS has extended support for SP3 until April 2014. Anyway, it won't stop working at that date, there just won't be any further updates. So you can forget about Vista ;)

I can't get one of the security updates to install even after disabling my firewall and spyware. I checked into the updates and couldn't find an extension for SP3. Anyway, why the comment about "So you can forget about Vista"?

Try installing the update in safe mode. Vista is an old OS now and isn't highly thought of at all. It really was a Win 7 beta, so if you are really considering an upgrade it should be to Win 7. Win 8 is also due shortly but doesn't offer much for desktop/laptop users as it's designed for touchscreen systems.

There is no difference in the SP for home users than IT, just how you install them. 99% of the updates that I pull for older XP systems, and Vista, and a lot for Windows 7, I pull from the IT, vs. regular stream.

I performed a system restore for another reason and was able to install the updates afterward. Thanks for the response and offer of help.
