Ok. I have a laptop here, and I recently decided to re-install Windows 2000 Pro.

Now, the laptop HAD Win2KPro on it already and was working fine, I had just done a brand-new install a couple weeks ago. (Don't asky why, but I decided to re-install again). So... I wiped out the entire drive - nothing on it, created new partitions and formatted....and began to install Win2KPro.

My CD-ROM drive started sounding like a blender with a fork stuck in it... and halfway through the first portion of setup (where Windows is copying files) it errored out and said it was unable to copy a file. (halacpi.dll). Skipped the file, and it was encountering errors copying many other random files. WINDOWS will not setup and finish installing now.

I figured the CD-ROM was bad, so I bought a replacement one (however, its NOT direct from the laptop maker although its the same model and type). The CD-rom seems to work, (its recognized in BIOS, etc).... and it can copy files. But halfway through the setup, again it encounters errors copying files.

Came across a page on MS website saying it might be the CD disk is dirty.
I've tried TWO copies of the Windows 2000 CD.. same problem with both (and one is brand new). Plus they work fine in other systems, so I know its not the CD-Rom.
Another article suggested the ACPI settings in the HAL are wrong, and to manually set the HAL during setup. I tried this, trying EACH option in the HAL list for type of processer (with ACPI, single, multi, etc). Either it hangs totally, or setup fails again and has errors copying files.

So.. .before I go and spend 150 bux on a replacement CD-Rom drive from the manufacturer, is there anything else anyone can think of that I should try ??

    Thanks much.

The system is an IBM A22m laptop, PIII800mhz, it does support PC98 and ACPI, it has the latest BIOS, and all the hardware was working fine (up until the recent problem with the CD-ROM drive).
