Installing Windows 10

Recently I attempted to install Windows 10 on my Gateway computer (presently using Windows XP).

However, the Windows 10 DVD (purchased through Newegg...it has a blue paper label) will not boot.

Two methods of getting started were tried. Neither was successful.

When invoked from the Windows/Start/Run prompt:
    F:\setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

When invoked as boot (using BIOS sttings):
    Invalid Boot Diskette
    Insert BOOT diskette in A:

How do I get things going, and how do I make a BOOT diskette (the DOS-window FORMAT
command does not appear to have a "make boot disk" option, and the Explorer one won't work)?

    Hopefully,

    Kurt

The boot media type is not important, be it disc or stick, the data function remains the same.

What did you set the BIOS to boot from in first order?

Did you change from UEFI to Legacy boot mode and disable secure boot?

Just to be sure, you did purchase the 32 bit version of Windows 10 Home?

I don't know what UEFI or Legacy boot mode or secure boot is. Please would you explain? The "first boot device" was set to the DVD player.

    It is the 64-bit version.

If anyone needs it, I have the Everest report for this machine and would make it available.

    Thanks.

You should copy and paste the part that identifies your PC or at least the CPU. If it's a 32 bit CPU, your 64 bit OS will not work.

I highly doubt that a Gateway computer that came with XP installed has a 64 bit processor. If it is running XP Home then it is 32 bit. I assume it is running XP Home because you purchased a Home edition of Windows 10 rather than a Pro edition.

My newer eMachine 2009 with XP Home is only 32 bit. A refurbed Dell business computer from around 2004-2005 originally with XP Pro is also 32 bit.

It wouldn't surprise me one whit if you were right.

Why would neither the operating system or even the BIOS recognize a program on the DVD?

    Thanks

The Pentium III is a 32 bit processor. It is incompatible with the 64 bit OS you've attempted to install. You need the 32 bit version

Why not? Because you'll go mad waiting for anything to happen if you manage to install Windows 10. Isn't your time worth something?
The clock speed for a Pentium 3 is 400 MHz to 1.4 GHz.
Minimum for Windows 10 is 1 GHz so check where you speed falls before you buy a 32 bit version of Windows 10 only to discover the speed is too low.
Minimum Ram for Windows 10 is 1 GB for the 32 bit version. What is the maximum RAM the Gateway will support?

Most Windows 10 users run on 8 GB or more.

I have four Windows 7 computers in the house and all of them have 4 GB of RAM. I wouldn't consider running Windows 7 on 1 GB of RAM.

My advice, if you want to make a 20 year old computer usable, you install linux rather than Windows 10 on it.

It might not be fast enough...but we won't know until we try.

The maximum memory for this machine is (I think) 1 GB.

Eldon, that link shows 2GB minimum of RAM. Did MS up the requirements? I know they are killing off 32 bit Windows 10, perhaps that's why 2GB is not the minimum based on a 64 bit install.

plodr, I think some sites have taken it upon themselves to up the minimum RAM. Afterall, 1GB RAM will run only Windows. Opening a browser with a handfull of tabs will freeze or crash the system.

Also, looking at the detailed system requirements, especially CPU features, tells me the OP's PC will not run Windows 10.

Existing 32 bit systems will continue to be supported, just that no new ones are going to be available. My wife would not be well pleased if her 32 bit was taken away.

So, what happens to all the 32 bit computers that haven't upgraded yet. Are those just written off as lost customers? And also then bcome pernament security risks to the rest of the net?

You are all forgetting one factor.........Windows10 will run on just about anything bare bones, its when you start adding 3rd party software hogs that issues arise.
This includes security software as a main suspect.
