Installing Windows 2000 on a new Hard Drive

I am having trouble installing Windows 2000 on a new hard drive. When I get to the part where the PC is rebooting to install the software it shows 2 unpartitioned sections, C: and an extra partition that says unknown. It will not let me install on any of those partitions. Do I have to partition them myself under advanced install? Or am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help me in this?

Brand new?

Then probably the second partition contains manufacturers software for installing / the drive as a replacement and cloning the old system. Many do these days. If you don't need it you can safely delete the partition and use the whole disk. It may contain (bootable) partitioning tools.

What does the accompanying information say?

 

Its brand new. Im running the hard drive software right now. Let me get some more info and ill post right away.

 

I went and set up two partitions. I split up the drives for 150000 and 150000. Do you think that is a good thing?

 

If you need seperate partitions (one for OS, one for data/music/pics/whatever) then it's fine. Personally, I use one partition for everything, but that's my preference. One thing about Win2000, unless the CD has SP4, the windows setup program may report the hard drive size incorrectly as SP1 thru SP3 (I think; I know it's true for SP1 and SP2) will only recoginze HD sizes up to 127gb; any drive bigger than that will be seen as 127gb. You still get use of the entire drive, it's reporting the size incorrectly. This is fixed in SP4 which you can get thru windows updates after you're done installing the OS and drivers....
