I am preparing an older used computer for a retiree with a new Windows 98SE operating System. I have downloaded Windows 98 updates on my computer which is running Windows XP. The updates will not install on the Windows 98 computer. The error message that I get is telling me that the installer is missing "NTDLL.DLL:NTSHUTDOWN SYSTEM".

I downloaded NTDLL.DLL and installed it into the Windows System, System32 and Windows System 32/drivers but to no avail. The updates are still uninstallable.
I copied the Windows98 updates to a CD that was burned on my XP computer.
Is the fact that the updates were downloaded and burned on a Windows XP operating system CD causing the update installation problem?

Any help would be appreciated. The Windows 98 computer only has access to the internet by telephone modem and I don't relish downloading all of the updates at 56K.

    Thanks for any help.

I was going to recommend some 3rd party 'update packs' also.... I'm just curious, you say you downloaded the Win98SE updates using your XP computer, right? Where did you download them from? Microsoft no longer supports 95/98/ME and hasn't since 2005 or 2006 if I'm not mistaken, and no updates have been available since then....

Thank you for the quick responses. I will attempt to follow the suggestions offered. The site URL below contains a wealth of information regarding all of Microsoft's operating system. I did not download any "unofficial" updates, only the official Microsoft updates.

axcel also puts out updates for 98 and ME. i was installing these after MS stopped supporting the OS. (I could not upgrade one computer and didn't want to toss it).

You can spend days on his site just looking over what he has for one OS.

Plodr - many thanks for the quick response. You are absolutely right. That is an excellent site. The issue was not finding the windows 98se updates but rather downloading them on a windows XP operating system, burning a CD, then installing the updates on a Windows 98se operating system computer. The Windows 98SE could only access the internet by telephone modem and it would have taken an inordinate amount of time trying to download 25+ updates.

Again, thank you for your assistance, you have introduced me to a great site.

I borrowed a Linksys internet card from one of my other computers and temporarily installed it in the windows98 se computer and hooked up to satellite and consequently I finally downloaded all of the required updates from the Windows Update Center.

It sounds like you have that 98SE pretty well up to speed. :wine

Make an image so if you need to restore it, you don't have the headache again!
I've recycled two of my older computers to folks that need something better (2K installed on each). I burned an image of each so I at least could restore to something later than when the computers were purchased (1999 and 2000).

Plodr - great idea. This win98 doesn't have a CD burner on it but I did use the Windows BU that comes with Windows 98SE.

I ran into a problem with Zone Alarm and JP Firewall (Jettico). Both of them created lock-ups so I'll try to find another firewall that works later on. The lady that I'm doing this for will probably just use it for social e-mailing so I'm going to try to let her run with just Avast until I find something that is free and works.

I've had to reinstall my Windows XP several times, so I know the value of backing up. It's one of those lessons that a computer user usually only needs to learn once. :)

AVGRSX.EXE and SEARCHPROTOCHOLHOST.EXE seem to be running excessively. I believe that both of these programs are required to run the AVG virus detection software and the search engine for the desktop.

Is there any way to make these programs run less? I've checked my computer for viruses, malware, adware, et al. I also use System Care 5 (Free) to help clean up the registry.

    Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks: John
