Hey all I jus bought a new hard Drive and am now trying to install xp on it. I am able to boot from disk and copy files to the hard drive and all that good stuff. But when it reboots my computer it acts like its gonna start installing but a error comes up "Windows cannot continue cuz a file is either missing or corrupted" <windows root>system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of this file. I know not even what that file is but am almost positive it has to do wit the XP disk. I am installing off a burned copy. Im thinking that might be the reason but not sure. I could really use some input or advice as to how to either fix the problem or get the file.
    Thanks

Hmm, you really got me thinkin on this. Burned copies do sometimes freak up. if you can, try it on another computer. A while back, i used to walk to the library down the street and try my stuff out (just to see if it would boot) lmao. Im sure thats seriously frowned upon. So, if you can find a friend with a stock xp cd, try that. If it does well...lets just say make sure ya gotta blank cd-r.....lata'

Nah i dont think you need a new computer. Freshly burned though? hmm...Im fresh outa idea...surprising noone else has replied with their 2 cents. As for downloading the file...I think you may be S-O-L as far as that goes....most places where one would acquire such a think are often riddled with spyware and the such.<---strongly NOT advised...Also, try,(if you can that is...) acquire another hard drive from somewhere. Try installing on that, to rule out the hard drive....Who knows, maybe you got a lemon? its happend to me a few times,...maybe you got one too...lata....

If you plan on purchasing anything to fix the problem, purchase a legit copy of windows xp. :)

    Who said it wasn't legit?

It was burned, doesn't mean it wasn't legit. It may or may not be, but you can't make that conclusion from the above information.

The error is because of a bug, and not because it's a copy.

Read the link I posted for the information.

Where does it say it's not?

unless that copy of windows xp was burnt by someone working for microsoft, windows xp requires you to activate the copy of the operating system within 30 days after installing it. where ever that copy of windows xp was burnt from, someone didn't do a good job of pirating it. the process of activating it is electronic and it ensures that that copy of xp being used is a legitimate copy and that it is being used on only one computer. the fact that the copy of windows xp is burnt is saying that the copy is not legit. :)

So what if it's burnt? (and what does product activation have to do with it?)

I have made a copy of XP Pro, (which I own and paid for) and I only use the burnt copy and store the original for safekeeping.

I do that with all my games I own as well.

The copies are identical as far as the data they contain and how they behave.

I agree a legit copy is always the way to go, especially with an operating system, but a copy doesn't necessarily mean it's not.

It's still perfectly legal to make a copy of a disc you own, so therefore it's legit.

I agree with you, you can make copies for yourself for safekeeping but when you are gonna install it on another computer other than your own with a different IP and processor ID, you won't be able to get it to run right unless the program has been altered.

    Yes, off-course not.

Point I'm making though is that you cannot say that is what is going on with any degree of certainty from the author's comments.

That is just an assumption and not based on anything he has said.

Anyway, this is getting off topic and I already posted the solution to his problem so good day and good luck everyone. :)

EDIT: The reason he cannot get it to run right has nothing to do with it being a copy. It's a bug as the link I posted illustrates.
