Because of my work, I must install Word 97. I am currently using Office 2000. I have a Word 97 upgrade but when I try to install it, it does not recognize Office. It says "it cannot find any qualifying products". A technician from our office installed it once for me but I did not see how he did it. Any help? Thanks

I'm 99.9% sure that if your downgrading you have to completely uninstall your existing copy of word. I"m not sure though and may be mistaken. Perhaps someone like Adrynalyn can help you there.

If that is the case, my version of Word 97 will not work because it is an upgrade and if I delete Office 2000, I will have no versions of Word to upgrade from. Does anyone know where I can download a full version of Word 97. It is so old it has to be out there somewhere. Thanks for your help

If it is for your work then I would just ask them for a copy. After all, they have to get one to you somehow otherwise you can't work.

Thank you all for your help. I was trying to avoid having to make a service call, the office is far away.
It is not that Word 97 does anything that 2000 doesn't but it has to work with another program, which is old.
    Thanks again.

Word 97 uses a different format or something so the files are different then with word 2000. if you open up a word 97 file in 2000 it will messed up.

    Interesting?
I have 97 office & 2000 office full & upgrade, If I remember right when I install 2000 there was an option to save the 97 files and also recomended to do so, if one was to do so, I'd think it would be possible to downgrade back to 97.
Then another thought, if files were saved, would'nt ya think the program would be able to read both format's, if infact they use different formats?

    This probably wont help Kingxray,
Sorry I'm just thinking out loud.
    or typing out loud
    or typing without thinking
    Aha whatever.

You mean a word2000 doc in word97 dont you? cause that gives me trouble, unless saved as a word97 doc in the options

word97 to word2000 goes fine though

If it helps, in 2000 you can file|save as a previous version of word. We had to use for a bit while we were upgrading our 1500 computers. The only major problem for us is that you'll loose graphics when saving as an older version.

Thanks for all your responses but now I am confused. Are you saying I can replace 2000 with 97? If so how. When I tried it 97 told me that "it could not find a qualifying product" Any clue? thanks

No, they are saying that with 2000, you can save any documents you create in '97' mode, allowing machines running 97 to view them.

There is probably a specific file the upgrade program needs to see before it'll install. 2000 obviously won't have this file. Perhaps your computer guy did, and used it to 'trick' the upgrade into installing.
