I have a HP 6638 model desktop. I upgraded to 196MB memory, installed a CD burner and a 10/100 ethernet card in one of my PCI slots. I have a 533MHz processor. I have a copy of XP pro that I had gotten from school. I am just tired of running 98SE. I keep getting mixed feelings about installing this new OS. Some say yes and some say no. I guess there are some positive aspects and also negative points to the decision. I can add another 64MB of memory to my system. Is it worth the chance to see how the XP responds or am I making a bad decision? I have a recovery CD in case the install is unfavorable.

Also I bought a used SoundBlaster sound card that I am having trouble installing. I think I might have to disable the onboard sound card I have now. I mean the speakers and other components involved with sound are built into my motherboard. Do I have to disable this in the device manager. I have no luck with any drivers that came with the card or any drivers that i downloaded. Any help from you Geeks will be appreciated. I am sooo tempted to run this XP install CD. I can hardly wait for a reply, but I will.
    Thanks, blue

Stick with windows 98. Xp takes up alot of resources that you dont have. 512mb of ram is good for xp although it will work with less. And your processor is slow. How big is your hd?

My computer has 25mb of ram and 800mhz. Recently upgraded it from windows 98, and i dont think it was worth it. It is now much slower than it used to be.

Min. RAM is 64, recommened is 128MB. I've seen it run okay with 128. When you upgrade from 98 XP will install "uninstall file to allow you to revert back to 98. If you have a seperate partition on our HDD you can intall it there and allow your system to Dual-Boot. If you can add that 64 Megs do it!

I'm dual booting XP Home and XP Pro from the eval verision I got from school. And fixing to add 2003 Server too.

I have clients running xp on 200 mhz machines with 64 ram. They take ages to boot but once booted runs fine. As long as you keep the machine clean of spyware you should be fine with xp and in my opinon its deffinitaly worth the upgrade.

i meant to say 256mb ont 25. It also depends on what you use the pc for. If its for browsing the web and email, I guess it wont be bad to upgrade. But for games ... ive noticed a lag more with xp...

I'd say yes on xp if you want to play some of the more recent games but xp doesn't play some older games and you should find out what the maximum memory you computer will take because xp needs at least 130 megs and some new games need at least 512 megs. ;)
