Please post what it said, verbatim.

There is an entry added to the KDE control center (kcontrol). This assumes you are using KDE, of course!

  8. wolfx28

assuming jdm and kde are the same thing thats what i installed but i dont ee it in the applications....

Did you mean gdm? No, they work as login managers but are NOT the same.

    KDM= KDE Logon Manager
    GDM= Gnome Logon Manager

If you are using vanilla Ubuntu, you are using GDM, not KDM.

    Thats not Gnome.

I found Gnome to be a pain to setup themes, for the inexperienced anyway. Sure you don't want to try something like Kubuntu?

Its the same Linux distro but with KDE instead.

ok well it's like at this screen now that says this

    Mine is...different.

Im using a heavily modified KDE (your desktop gui), and Beryl (all the glitzy effects). A lot about Arch is manual setup. Kubuntu does a lot for you, but will it look like mine? With a lot of work it can.

On a new install, its gonna look like this:

    http://debianadmin.com/copper/albums/kfeisty/normal_0-1.png

You gotta customize youself. Its not hard to customize KDE, and there is an excellent site for it:

    http://www.kde-look.org

Here is what someone did to their KDE:

Here are some screenshots of what I use (KDEmod)

Bored Out Of My Mind is the local Ubuntu guru. Im sure he can help better than I.

The easy alternative is to go into Windows (dual booting right), delete the Linux partitions, then boot to the XP recovery console with the XP CD and run fixmbr to remove grub. Or boot to a Kubuntu CD and start a new installation, overwriting the old.

    Then start over.

Im sure Bored can help ya next time he logs on. Im not sure what kind of install you did, I dont even have postfix installed.

    Adrynalyne Guest

    Ok...

It seems to me you need some direction :)

So here is what I suggest on.

Boot to your Windows XP CD. You are dual booting with XP, right?
Log into the Recovery Console. You press 'R' at the first setup screen.
Choose the Windows installation (usually number 1), and then type in your admin password if you have one. If you dont, then just hit enter.

At the prompt, type this command.

fixmbr. Say yes to whatever prompts come up. This removes Grub (the Linux bootloader) from the master boot record.

Type exit. This reboots the computer.

In windows, right click My computer and choose manage.

On the left hand side choose disk management.

Deleted the linux partitions that were created.

    Now, download PCLinuxOS 2007.
    http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_ionfiles&Itemid=28

Burn the ISO to a CD. Reboot to the CD, and install it.

THis is how I partitioned my drive for Linux, how you decide is up to you.

    80mb for /boot, formatted as ext2.
    500mb for /swap
    139gb for /, formatted as ext3.

    Then install PCLOS.

This is as simple as I can make it for you with as little sleep as I have had. Good luck.

    Look at this, too.

    Running Linux by itself then?

Just downlaod PCLinux OS 2007, burn it to CD, boot the CD, and do a new installation, wiping off everything on the drive.

Sorry, I really cant get much simpler than this :(

  43. wolfx28

    wolfx28 Sergeant

what do u mean whiping everything off the drive it isint partitioned i just installed on the C drive and when i boot it askes me what O.S i want to boot in

and can i burn the iso to a CD-R or does it have to be DVD

    Wolf

  44. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

PCLOS goes on CD, I believe.

You could waste a DVD and put it on there, too, if you felt so inclined.

  45. wolfx28

    wolfx28 Sergeant

oh good i dont have an dvd's:p but dont i have to partition it first because i want to keep windows obviously

    Wolf

  46. wolfx28

    wolfx28 Sergeant

ok so i was looking at the screen shots and in installer2 screenshot it says use free space on windows partition so do i have to partition at all?

    Wolf

  47. wolfx28

    wolfx28 Sergeant

ok so i got this thing to partition but it asks what format to use and i dont know what to chose

    FAT32
    NTFS
    Linux Ext2
    Linux Ext3
    ResiserFs
    Linux swap2

    Wolf

  48. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    /boot partition -ext2
/swap is of course, Linux Swap
    / partition is ext3.

    Thats how I have it.

  49. wolfx28

    wolfx28 Sergeant

umm lol maybe i'm not reading it right but i dont see an answer there:p or i just dont understand what do to:p

    Wolf

Then, you arent reading it right, as you said.
