Installshield Engine (ikernel.exe) error

1 of my childern seems to have deleted some files. I am receiving error messages when I try to load software. Can anyone help?

If not, post the exact error verbatim.

 

No sir it is not . I did eadr that post and looked at that. The error says " Installshield Engine (iKernel.exe) RPC Server not available"

I'm assuming it's XP?

Go to Start, Run and type in services.msc then OK.


Scroll down to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and double-click it.

Make sure it's set to Automatic and it's Started.

 

It is started and set to auto.

 

The 2nd was on manual set to auto

 

and started it . Same error message.

 

Check DCOM Server Process Launcher.

 

I do not see it in the same list. Could it be gone?

 

Look again, it should be there, under D.

 

There are 4 items under D and thats not 1 of them.

 

I have now received a different error when installing a differt program. "1607 error"

I need a ver.4 . Non of the files worked. I removed the file and tried all 4.

Determine the file version of the program you are trying to install, then follow THESE steps to install a new engine.

As far as DCOM, do you have SP2 installed?

 

Yes sp2 is installed

 

Those are the instructions I followed.

 

I will attempt again.

 

It is ver.4 It's not installing.

 

No other thoughts?

 

Try uninstalling SP2, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350

Then reinstall SP2, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875364

See if that helps.

Can you use System Restore to get you back to normal desktop?


I would start considering doing a Repair, and if that doesn't help, formatting and starting again.

No it will not restore.

 

Now it will not boot. NTLDR is missing? Ideas?

 

NTLDR missing isn't that hard to fix normally, but if I were you, I would consider a Repair or format.

A repair is basically installing Windows over itself. You will lose Service Packs, but your files and programs will be preserved.

HERE are the steps for the ntldr issue, but you will still have the other problems, which is why I suggest you consider your other options.
