Instant Messenger services won't connect

I recently worked on a friend's computer, added spybot search & destroy, updating her virus scanner, and defragging her computer. very simple maintenance i thought.

however, upon restarting her computer for SPYBOT S&D, her AIM program would no longer connect. her internet connection is operational and she can surf the web, but no IM programs work.

i tried un-installing and re-installing aim to no avail. i had her download trillian to see if another messenger program would work, but none will.

she contacted her college's computer specialist but they refused to help. her roommate has no problem's connecting on their line so it must be her personal machine.

any help would be appreciated.

CORRECTION: her im programs work in the college's library, however, they do not work on either of the dorm's connections. how is it possible that only her computer is affected by the block, and what kind of block is it?

What kind of net connection?

Behind a router?

Using a firewall?

I have trillian and iv got the same problem. AIM and Yahoo connect fine but MSN refuses. After defrag norten and spybot i reboot and MSN is dead . btw i have win xp pro, ZA pro and 2mb cable. ~~~~ update MSN still whont connect with ZA pro off. :/
