Intel 2.4 GHz Prescott running hot....I think.

I built my first comp today and everything went great, but I noticed my CPU is hot according to the BIOS. It started at about 60C and now its hanging around 80c! I thought maybe it was reading incorrectly so i intalled speedfan software. I'm not sure which one is the CPU temp that speedfan lists because it just says Temp 1 Temp 2 ect., but I'm assuming its the highest one. It shows about 60C. Then I installed thottlewatch software to see if I was throttling but it showed no thottling. I'm gonna try and find some artic silver tommorow at local stores and see if that helps. I also set the comp to shut down in the BIOS if it goes over 60c which is hasnt done. Makes me think the temperature readings are incorrect. It probably would have crashed if it really was 80c! Also the case temp appears normal at 30c. Let me know what you think!

 

Anything over 60 is definately TOO HOT!!!

When you installed the CPU and HSF did you put a thin layer of thermal paste on the top of the CPU to disperse the heat a little better? It makes all the difference.

 

No i did'nt put any thermal grease on it. Just the pad is on it. I'm going to buy some in a few and try it.

 

I wouldnt use the pad, use the grease.. works a lot better IMO

 

Yeah I used the grease today. Dropped about 10 to 30C!!!!! Thats awesome.
