I have a gateway M350WVN laptop, with windows xp home. Reinstalled xp and now i cannot get the audio to work, although in looking at device mgr, all looks like its working. Just no sound. Have updated intel chipset drivers and anything else I could find.
I have tried to install this audio driver many times. I do not have original discs, so not sure if the driver I d/l is the correct one. Any help would be appreciated...

    Hey! Thanx Halo
I tried this driver first. But it will not work. However this driver (sigmatel ac'97} and the other one are the only ones that will install. But neither work. I was hoping someone with a m350 gateway might have had this problem and found a solution. I'm sure the sigmatel is probably the correct one, but maybe an updated driver is available that I can't find. Don't know

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major
So you installed the chipset driver before installing the sound driver? Well, Gateway is pretty well known for having incorrect and/or non-working drivers at their web site, it's happened to me on many occasions. Give me a little time and I'll try to track down the correct drivers for you. In the meantime, hopefully someone else will come along and solve this for you if I take too long ;)

EDIT: try this driver for the Sigmatel AC97 ICH4. The download is a file called "E0100027.EXE". When you run it, it will extract to a folder on your desktop (or where-ever you download the EXE) called "3900ich4". When installing the driver, try using the Hardware Wizard's Have Disk method instead of simply launching the setup.exe file.

    Good luck! Keep us posted!

Hi again! Tried your driver with no luck. But found some new information. I opened the case and found that the sound chip is a "sigmatel 9752T". Haven't found anything for this except one for a Dell. Don't know if this would work. Sandra says sound driver is Intel, everest says its a sigmatel. Both say it is disabled. I have checked bios and services, and they are on. Don't know where to check.

After some very, very creative Google-ing, I found this driver at a Korean forum (no, I don't speak or read Korean). The few English words on the page said "STAC9752/9753 Win2000/XP" and there was a download link. So, I downloaded the zip file, unzipped it, and there it is. Hopefully, it will work for you. Let us know!!! Good luck!

(the link is direct download link, meaning the download dialog will open w/o being routed to a different web page)

After installing intel chipset driver, didn't change anything. Now when I run sandra or evereast, they both show audio device as "Gateway 2000 82801DBM AC"97 Audio controller (ACH4-M B1 step)". Even though I reinstalled Sigmatel c-media from gateway. Don't understand this.

Did you try the link I posted above? The one in the Korean forum? If not, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any sound drivers that may be listed. Reboot. Install the chipset drivers, reboot, then install the driver I linked to above (I'll link you to it again here). Do not use the setup.exe. Go to the device manager, and use the "Have Disk" method where you have to tell the hardware wizard exactly where to find the driver, and if you get any warnings, install it anyway. Then reboot when it finishes. If you've already done this, exactly how I've detailed here, then, unfortunately, I'm out of ideas. :( Unless it's an HD audio device (which I really doubt due to the fact that it's ICH4 or 5), then try installing KB888111 from this web site. Scroll down until you see KB888111 and click the green 'download' on the right. Reboot when it finishes. Be sure to install KB888111 before installing the sound driver, but after installing the chipset driver.

    GOOD LUCK!
