I just bought this refurbished computer and the sound won't work. I see that there is a common problem with the intel 8280db ich4-ac'97 audio controllers. I've attached the report from AIDA32.

According to Aida32, I have a Intel Rexburg D845GRG motherboard and under "Multimedia --> PCI/PnP Audio" it says the following: Intel 82801DB(M) ICH4(-M) - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-0] PCI

When I went to the Device Manager, under Sound, Video and game controllers, there wasn't a CODEC. For instance, my laptop has SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC listed along with Audio Codecs, Legacy Codecs, etc...which this PC has as well. BUT, under "Other devices" in the device manger, it has a yellow question mark next to "Multimedia Audio Controller."

Any suggestions? I tried download and installing drivers from intel for my mother board with the AC'97 audio controller but it would go through the installation and then say that there was no driver found and that i need to restart. Hi

If you didnt install the Intel Chipset drivers (#8 in the driver list in your link) first the Audio driver is likely not to be installed correctly.

So install Chipset and reboot then install Audio.

What Windows version and service pack do you have?

I am running XP professional with service pack 3. I installed the Chipset drivers you suggested. I'm just not sure what driver to download for the audio controller. I've looked around online and have noticed that the ac'97 has given people lots of problems (driver wise) and that the driver needed varies depending on the MB and such. What's next? Thanks.

I have tried to install the Realtek Ac'97 driver but I get the blue screen of death. I'm assuming this means that the sound card I have is not a Realtek AC'97? I went to the device manager and uninstalled the driver. Then i restarted the computer and the message pops up "New Hardware Found." and then it says the device is a Realtek AC'97. But when I follow the new hardware wizard, it starts to install and then tells me to put in the Realtek AC'97 CD-ROM to finish installation. Thoughts?

    Hi

as only on SP2 you may need to install the UAA driver then the Audio to get it to work ok.

Cannot find an E-2000 anywheres on Emachines downloaded site sadly.

I cannot offer much new advice... all I can suggest is what has already been recommended; install the chipset drivers (download from here), restart the PC, then uninstall the current audio drivers (go to Add/Remove Programs), restart the PC, then install a new sound driver (download from here). If this doesn't work, maybe tfry a repair install of Windows. Good luck!

(used sound cards can be found at your local used PC store for under $10 if needed; new generic sound cards are only about $25 or so and have surprisingly high quality sound)
