I am probably getting an AMD processor but I noticed intel P4 seem to have much higher clock speeds than a comparable AMD, does this mean the p4 would perform better or are AMD athlon 64 processors more efficient? I want a budget gaming machine under $1,000 also which custom PC sites would you reccomend, I am considering
    ibuypower.com
    cyberpowerinc.com
    newegg.com
my local PC store pro computer

    cyberpower seems pretty good.

More efficient. Intel works off the premise that ghz is god. AMD proves otherwise ;)

Think of a CPU as a crane moving things from the a dock to a cargo ship..... if ya have 2 cranes working at the same speed yould think that thay whould transfer the same amount right ??? Not if one transfers more at a time then the other .... The point im trying to make is that AMD has a higher IPC ( instructions per clock ) then intel... so thay move more per move .... Intel has gone for pure speed and more less thrown the amound thay move at a time to the wind to get the highest clock speed thay can get ( to compete with AMD ) thats what AMD + rating is all about... a 3200+ is ~ to a 3.2 GHz intel cpu...even thow it runs at ~2Ghz.....

AMD 64 is a great decision for a mid-budget gaming pc, especially now that prices have dropped a bit.

    you can get a 3200+ Venice for ~$150 or a 3500+ Venice for ~$200.
Pair that with an Asus A8N series (like the A8N SLI Deluxe) and you have a great start.

use www.pricewatch.com and www.pricegrabber.com to search for prices, but be wary of no-reputation stores.

some good ones are newegg, zipzoomfly, chiefvalue, monarch, e-wiz.. and i'm sure i missed a few but theres a good start.

Your comparing a 64 bit processors with a 32 bit processor? Thats like comparing apples and oranges.

Yes thats truth currently but in the near future as more 64 bit games come out it will make a huge difference, already today there are 64 bit games, the one that comes to mind is far cry.

I've pretty much decided an AMD 3200+ or 3500+ is about what I want, thx for the help.also, I just learned that AMD has stopped making 32 bit processors.

Oh and what i ment to say is when talking about them do mention the differences like 32 or 64 bit.

Nope, it breaks my heart that Intel isn't intelligent enough to do the same thing to desktop CPUs, which are by far a bigger seller. Lets not forget it beats Intel desktop CPUs in gaming too.

It breaks my heart even more knowing that Apple was using IBM CPUs that smoked both Intel and AMD w/ lower ghz, but will now go to Intel who doesn't understand what efficiency is.

If/when they making 64bit games better. As for now, its just a ploy. Nothing in Far Cary 64bit can't be added to the 32 bit version, and 64 bit doesn't help performance at all with the game.

I doubt it. There is too much 32 bit software for them to not have legacy support, which means that even in a couple years, there will amost certainly be 32/64 bit CPUs.

True 64 bit requires 64 bit only software.

Isn't the operations per clock cycle ratio 3:2 with amd:intel (amd spits out 12 and intel spits out 8 i believe...)?

    Bye Intel...

I'll agree, but i DO see a constant 50-60 FPS jump between 32 bit and 64 bit farcry :p

Well, thats good. Because all of the review sites out there (that I've read) say otherwise ;)
