A friend asked me to resuscitate, if possible, his Dell comp after a lightning strike took it out. He wanted it to remain at original spec (go figure) even if I had to start rebuilding from the bare case.

This is my question. I've only dealt with AMD processors on the systems I've built, so when I pulled the heatsink off the CPU I saw that it was a LITTLE BITTY TINY thing. Are all intel processors this size? or is this a "Dell" thing? Or is the Socket 478 specifically designed for a smaller CPU?

Socket 478s have a metal heat shield on like AMDs now do ( Intel implemented this metal heat shield cover over the CPU core before AMD as a fyi ), exactly like this Picture

if that shield is not their ( or suck to bottom of heat sink ) then its a dell thing but would be suprised if they had removed or used intel cpus without that shield.
