I am buying a new Desktop and Laptop and I need to find the best Core Duo for best performance. Both computers will be doing everything from business office, to running extreme graphics and a lot more.

The CPU I have picked for the laptop is...
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)

The CPU I have picked for the desktop is....
    Intel ® Core™2 Duo Processor E6400 (2.13GHz, 1066 FSB)

Now I know these are not the absolute best Intel makes, what I need to know is, are these processors good and will they be able to give me the perfomance I need?

If anyone has a better CPU or recommendation please let me know. Thanks!

Hey BJ.....The CPU choices you list are 'high end performers' with enough processing power to run any of todays latest applications!
Your graphics solution may ultimately depend on the card you select to run in conjunction with your new system specs.
The FSB at 1066 suggests that the motherboard should support DDR2 RAM at PC8000 clock speeds if you so desire, which is more than capable of handling the largest multi-tasking scenerio's that you can throw at it!
I would run a minimum of 1gig RAM at these specs, with 2x 1gig sticks being the preferred option, although the mobo should support a total of 8 gigs.

If you need to go any higher in CPU content, you must be thinking of launching your own space shuttle..lol
I dont have any experience with notebooks, but i would dearly love your desktop capabilities, and this CPU is great for an overclock scenerio.

    Good Luck in all!

    Regards...

Thanks for the suggestions guys, so how many different types of Core Duos are they?

I know of the below? Are there any more? As long as it's a Core2 Duo, it's a good and fast CPU, correct?

Thanks guys, I appreciate your time helping me better understand this new technology.

    Found this, Hope it helps

The basic Core 2 Duo family will consist of four processors: the E6300, E6400, E6600, and E6700. They will run at clock speeds of 1.86 GHz, 2.13 GHz, 2.40 GHz, and 2.67 GHz, respectively. The E6300 and E6400 will be equipped with a 2-MB L2 cache; the other two models will have a 4-MB L2 cache. All will have a 1,066-MHz front-side bus, and will pack 291 million transistors onto a 143 square-meter slice of silicon.

At the top of the line, a Core 2 Extreme processor is being aimed at gaming systems. It's designed the X6800 and will have a clock speed of 2.93 GHz.

At Thursday's event, Intel is expected to emphasize the arrival of its four Core 2 Duo mobile processors. The T5500, T5600, T7200, T7400, and T7600 parts will run at clock frequencies of 1.66 GHz, 1.83 GHz, 2.0 GHz, 2.16 GHz, and 2.33 GHz, respectively.

Thanks for that information, I'm starting to understand these new processors a bit more now.

If I choose either of the two CPU's below for my new Desktop I will be perfectly fine as in performace, correct?

*Cough* $900 for a CPU? I think I'll wait on this one, lol.

Let me ask this, will these two CPU's for a Desktop be ok for just about anything?

Are ye going to overclock? If not, I'd choose the e6600. Which is what I'll be getting in a few months.

    Another article to look over:

    http://techreport.com/reviews/2006q3/e6300-vs-sff/index.x?pg=1

In the end. Yes. Either one is ok. Is the e6600 worth the extra $100? Yes, when it comes to encoding, or Intensive graphics processing, where the cpu matters, not games.... Most games, the GPU is what really counts. :)

What extreme graphics are we talking about? Autocad, or Maya?

    IMHO.

    No, not going to overclock.

I will go ahead with the E6600, because if I'm paying for a new computer, might as well get the better when I can. Even though this will be obsolete tomorrow, I will enjoy it the day I get it. LOL!

I run PhotoShop CS2, GTA, Doom and starting to play Halo a little. Just a few of the things I do. I do all of my business stuff, Office 03 w/ Accounting and things like that. Every now and then when I have time I design using 3D Home Architect, for fun that's all.

What kind of GPU are ye looking at? Since the e6600 is about $320 or so, what is your budget on the graphics card?

Myself, I'm eyeing either the 7950GT, or the 8800 GTS. Leaning towards the 7950 GT.
If ATI/AMD I'd lean to 1900 XTX, but this would be foolish, since the 8800 gts is better. IMHO. At the cost that is. :)

The desktop I am buying is the Dell XPS 410. It will have the specs below...

What do you think? This system is $1,404.00 with tax and shipping.

    IMHO.....

The 7300LE needs to be upgraded.

Since this is an nvdia card, think of it this way.

5200, 6200, 7300, are ALL low end cards. Think basic starter cards. Yes, the 7300 should be okay, for some games. But, not really intensive graphics for games. Will be a-okay with photoshop cs2.

I'd go with 7600 gt, 7900 GT, or the 7950 GT (recommended). But, the cost will go up.

So if I go up on the graphics card, this will be a hell of a machine, yeah?

Yes, indeed. Not top of the line, but, very good, I believe, you'll be satisfied. :)

A lot better than my current system. :)

Oh I know it's not top of the line, I saw the top of the line. They can go up to whatever your willing to pay for one.

A lot better than my current system, I'm still running a P4 2.6GHz, 1GB RAM, GeForce FX 5500 OC 256MB and 120 GB HDD.

I would say it's time for an upgrade, I want the new one now but if I waited until like Feb. the price would go down most likely.

The nice thing BJ is you can upgrade that puppy to the quad core, as they use the same socket. So your new desktop should have a few good upgrades left in it before it becomes yesterdays news.

    Current system I have is:

    Athlon xp 3200+
    1.5 DDR 400
    Nvidia 6800 (vanilla) 128mb.

My new system will be close to yours, bjgarrick. :)

One final thing, post the video card, you are interested in. :)

That's good news, I wasn't so lucky on my current system.

The video card I am selecting most likely is the one below.

I wish! Nah really the one I'm going to get is the 256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS

Looks good. 7950GT is what I'm personally leaning to. But, overall, you should be pleased. :)

I'm looking forward to getting this new machine, it will be so much better than the one I have now.

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate the time.

Hey BJ just giving a little back for all you do on the Malware Thread, and hope that you get hours of enjoyment from your new Comp. Just make sure you get rid of all the Cr*p that the good folks at Dell "give" you with the new Comp.;) :D

Thanks, I know I will enjoy the new machine. I just updated to Acrobat Pro 8 and it uses a lot of resources. I run about 12 programs all the time so this upgrade is really needed.
