I have an Intel D845GVSR motherboard which I am trying to install xp on, the problem is when I boot it up and try to enter the bios settings I cannot select anything via keyboard it is not working, similarly if I try an boot from rescuse floppy I cannot continue because the keyboard is not active. I have tried serial and usb keyboards none work but, if I try and install ubuntu it will go so far and then stop at a command line then the keyboard is active?? I have tried the bios rescuse disc from intel and it works untill I have to press any key to continue. I have manually reset the bios but to no avail, I am alll out of ideas at this stage, any suggestions?

    Hi GQ,

If that's a USB Keyboard that's all you will get. Try a PS2 keyboard. Maybe?

    Good Luck, Jim

    Hi again CQ,

Obviously the keyboards are not at fault. The only thing that comes to mind at this point is a BIOS SETUP error. Happens sometimes. Reset your BIOS SETUP. Jumper on MB is best. Removing the CMOS Battery for several hours with all AC power removed is next best.

    Hi Jim,

Actually leaving the battery out for a couple of hours is the only thing I have'nt tried. I will do this and post back to-morrow.

To be honest 30 minutes will do as much as any number of hours.

Also, make sure you are switching keyboards with the computer off. After the keyboard is attached, start the PC.

I think... (im pretty sure anyway) that your computer will read the keyboard from the mouse port as well???

    Hi Guys,

I left the cmos battery out all night and then tried it again but, the keyboard is still not active. I get the flash of the three lights on the keyboard during posting alright but thats all. I think the only thing left to do is remove the bios chip (de-solder) and flash off the board.

    Hi CQ,

Sach 2 may be correct on some MBs, but some MB designers use enough capacity to give you time to change the battery, a few minutes. Smarter designers use enough to let you take the old batt with you to get the new one, several hours. A couple of hours should be OK for all MBs. Again the batt jumper will clear it instantaneously. Over night certainly should do it. You do not change the CMOS BIOS chip. You download the latest BIOS and Flash the chip with it. Very seldom needed to fix a MB. Usually only flash one to add a new feature that you need or fix a maker's mistake in the BIOS.

    Luck, Jim

    Hi,

This is a strange one on me I must admit..
I can't use any facility which requires a keyboard stroke because it's not active.
Out with the rework station I think!!
