I have recently been getting messages from the Intel Event Monitor about imminent hard drive failure. The Event Monitor comes up every week or so and goes away after I restart my computer. I called Dell and tech support said it was a software issue, not my hard drive getting ready to fail. He told me to get rid of Limewire, which I did. He also told me to repair Windows XP, which I can't at the moment because my backup drive is not working. I have Symantec Security & Anti-Virus running; WIndows Firewall; Spybot, Adaware, Scotty the Dog, & Spyware Guard. I update all programs daily when I run them and they haven't found anything except the usual tracking cookies. I went to PC Pitstop & ran all of their security tests as well and it said everything was fine.

I was wondering if it would be possible that someone is using my computer. I leave it on all night and have cable internet which is on all the time. Could someone be using my computer without any of my security detecting the usage? Or do I just need to repair Windows XP (Home Edition)? Let me know if additional info is needed.

    Thanks!

    Would suggest the following:
    Zone Alarm Free: http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html
    then:
    Panda online active scan
    http://www.activescan.com
Then ....control panel / admin tools / computer management / disc managaement and see how the drive is being reported (healthy?).
Could then run a check disc and repair (my computer / right click c drive / properties / tools / check disc).:)
