Hello. I am desperate for help. i will go thru everything i've done to help pinpoint the problem:
I just re-installed windows on my machine. My Intel 875pbz mobo has built in Lan.
Just before reinstalling windows, i did a bios update to the latest bios from the intel website. It seemed to work fine. The i re-installed windows xp pro, with a hard drive reformat. The lan was working before the reinstall.

I installed the latest drivers for the mobo from the intel website after that. One thing that happened here - after installing the chipset drivers, when the installation was complete, i lose control of the mouse, it hangs, but the system is not frozen. i had to select the installation option 'restart' (the driver installation had finished) using the enter and tab keys. This happened during my second re-installing of windows too (see below). i figured it was just because usb drivers (its a usb mouse) were being installed.

Then when i reboot, my internet/lan isnt working despite having installed the drivers.
I see no 'local area connection' under network connections (just 1394 connections). The network wizard doesnt help. The device manager lists my 'ethernet controller' with a yellow exclamation mark.
So i try to install the old bios version (the one i had before the update), which works, but the LAN still doesnt work. So i reinstall windows again, install all mobo drivers, then get all windows updates, reinstall latest bios. lan still doesnt work.
So i shut down the computer, and i put in a pci network LAN card (linksys) instead of using the intel's built in lan. This gets me a connection, it works.

I have lan enabled in the bios. i have tried changing 'wake on lan' and all other bios lan options i could find.

so built in LAN won't work, help!

I have a pentium 4 3.0ghz. Also, i cleaned the processor fan and removed the heat sink, put in new thermal paste. not sure if that is affecting anything. I dont have roxio installed.

I'm having exactly the same problem in reinstalling a clean windows. In the course of it, I installed two different installations of Windows XP, and Win2K. I had to clean w/ format reinstall my OS for other reasons, and once I installed Win2k, the ethernet card came up as unavailable. Trying to fix it, I flashed the BIOS to the newest version (whereupon my case fans/LEDs have started to misbehave (is this type of error typical w/ BIOS updates?). No luck. I've also tried to reinstall the INF drivers, and didn't really have any luck there. The automated INF utility never shows any options after the reboot (readme says it will). When I tried to do the non-automated drivers installation, I was unable to find the devices called for in the readme in the Control Panel, even when viewing Devices by Connection. I've tried command line version of rewriting the drivers, but no luck there either. I have no problems connecting through the USB to the modem and getting access.
    Any ideas?
I'm probably going to just buy a LAN card and give up on the on-board lan.

@soulslinga ....what is the ! saying about the device?
Have you disabled it/removed it in device manager and rebooted?
In event viewer, system, any error messages....if so what is the error code?

sorry but due to that problem and a host of others, i replaced my motherboard, i have a tyan now. (this post is quite old).
i did realize after uninstalling the mobo that i had some bent processor pins, so you guys should keep that in mind. Besides that, i dont recall any specific errors. if i remember correctly, it was as if the onboard lan had just 'vanished,' i think it dissappeared from the device manager but i could be wrong.
    thanks anyway for the replies.

    Guys,
I was actually able to fix it, giving it way too much time.

I went through the detailed documentation notes for the mobo and found that the ethernet controller's name was
    IntelĀ® 82547EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
which has a download page at
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1068
You *can't* find this link on the main mobo support page, and the technical info isn't easy to get at either.

The link seems to work just fine. Perhaps if you decide to use the mobo again - and it sounds like you won't - you could use that info.

Sorry I didn't notice this earlier. But, as you have found, the onboard LAN drivers are not contained with the chipset drivers, which cover AGP, USB, and Core PCI.
