I'm pretty sure that this is the processor that will go in my new system, but I would like to know if this processor will work with (Windows XP Pro x64). I am confused about this because it(intel.com) says stuff about 64 bit computing. If it does is their a big difference in performance from the normal Windows XP Pro?

I am building this new rig because right now I have a Celeron 1.3GHz, 384Mb of Ram, GeForce MX 440 64Mb.

My new computer will have the Pentium 4 640 3.2GHz, 1 Gig (2x512Mb) of DDR2 PC4200, 500 Watt X-Connect from Ultra, GeForce 6800 GT 256Mb PCI Express, Gigabyte 8I955X Royal motherboard, and all of this in a Ultra Dragon case.

p.s. even if you can't help me with my question please tell me if im going to see a difference. I plan on overclocking too.

    Thanks,
    Steven

Actually most of the benchmarks I've seen show the 64-bit version with lower framerates than the 32-bit version. And there are some games that don't support x64 yet. Add in the compatibility issues with hardware and there is no real reason to get it.

I wouldn't recc. Wxp 64 personally, I have it / tried it and for gaming its a big no no. Alot of beta drivers, and errors running 32bit software even though it was 'full backwards compatability' with them. Personally Im an AMD man, more power for less money, and they run somewhat cooler then P4s which today is very important to have. (less heat that is)

I would like to get more info on why AMD is faster and cheaper. The other choice for a processor was AMD Athlon 64 3700+, but I dont understand why 2.2GHz would run faster than a 3.2GHz. I do all of my shopping a tigerdirect.com and the P4 is $30 cheaper than the AMD. I didnt write this to piss people off I just would like a explaination.

    Thanks

AMDs processor architecture is far more efficient(for the most part) than Intels ... if you game you want an AMD .. *ponders why I didn't buy an AMD* ... anyway  .. oh yea ... it was the best I could get for~200$ at the time :D .. it really was

What is the best AMD Athlon 64 Socket 939 that I can get for no more than $350? Where is a good online store other than tigerdirect.com? Yall might have convinced me to go with AMD if there is a good processor for a reasonable price.

Just to clarify, AMD uses a rating system to match Intel's Ghz rating. For example, an AMD 3200+ would perform up to speed with an Intel 3.2Ghz processor on most applications.

Wyatt, that is something that I didn't know. Thank you so much this makes everything a lot easier.

going back to your original question , yes the intel 640 will run xp 64 it will also overclock to 3.4 ghz without modifying cooling and i have had it run at 3.6 and was fine until i started hl2, better cooling needed if you want to go much above 3.4 with it, very stable and performs well i've had mine for over a year now and it still works fine , been running at 3.4 since the day i got it.
