    Hey Guys,
I was wondering what to do. Should I keep my Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 550j
DO Stepping @3.4GHz or upgrade to an Intel Pentium Dual Core e5300? Vote on the poll and leave your Opinions. P.S. It is Hyper-Threading (the Pentium 4)

Would need to know this first.

But as a striaght question, i would choose the p4 anyday, it is a huge overclocker and as you said, has HT enabled.

Are you sure your motherboard supports the dual core?

Ya my motherboard supports the QX9750. It has a P43 Chipset with an ICH10 SB. Every time i try to run some demanding applications it crashes. A few games and I have several old programs and games that require emulators. When I run those the system overloads itself.

    Hi

If your motherboard supports a better CPU and you have funds then great its a worthwhile update to the CPU (although I would be tempted to go with the Coreā„¢ 2 Duo E4700), but also what amount of RAM is in that PC also?

What are the specs of that PC (including OS)? as CPU is only part of getting a PC running at peek performance.

    Hi

With 4GB ram I would be looking at changing my Windows version to Vista x64 or more so Win7 x64 (as your mobo does have Win7 x64 drivers for the main bits of LAN and Audio and Chipset) as XP wont be able to utilise the full amount in x86, yes the E7500 would be a great choice also.

I have a few of the P4 HT at 3.0 GHZ, and I have to say for an older processor it has taken all I can throw at it. The newest game I have run on it is the online Star Trek game - the requirements for it are fairly advanced and it runs without a hitch. Coupled with an advanced video card (AGP version of the Radeon 3850) and 2gb of RAM, the system still gives good bang for the buck. Most of the system is right at five years old.

The downside of the P4's is they are getting pretty old . . . not so much of an issue for the processor itself (like burrell said they do overclock well), but the motherboards they plug into are getting outdated - I.E. video cards are now PCI-E . . . advanced AGP cards are becoming scarce. Also, newer boards use third generation RAM (DDR3) . . . it's considerations like these that will cause the trusty P4's to slowly fade away.

True, there are a few what I call "cross-over" boards - I bought one that uses the P4 but supports DDR2 RAM and has a PCI-E slot; but there isn't a lot of them to choose from.

I know the cutting edge, O.C. till-it-bleeds crew out there are shaking their collective heads at me . . . but, untill my trusty PC fails to do what I want or need it too, I'm sticking with her! :)
