    What should I do?

    Click 'View the message'.

    I got a pale blue screen with two boxes. One says

    Interactive Services Detection
    Return to your Windows desktop
    The program will display its own window below if it still needs attention.
    When you are done, or if you need to return to your desktop for more information, click Return now.
    Return now

    and the other says

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe
    This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
    Please contact the application's support team for more information.
    OK

    Does the program or application's name come up?

    I've told you all I can see. I wouldn't leave anything out. That's all I know. Isn't the program's name in the second box?

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe
    This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
    Please contact the application's support team for more information.
    OK

    :oops: Sorry.
    I did see the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. But I was focusing on the spoolsv.exe.
    Does this message appear when using the printer?

    This is the first time this message has ever appeared, as I recall. And I'm not using the printer. The printer's not even plugged in right now.

    This is a temporary fix.
    Open Services and find Interactive Services Detection. Change the Startup type to Disabled. Restart the PC.
    Check if the printer works.

    Have just done all this apart from checking the printer. I already know it isn't working properly from a month or so back. But I don't know what this sudden message could have to do with the printer. The printer's not plugged in, the computer's not connected to it (separate rooms and it's not a wireless printer if there is such a thing), and I know that I didn't accidentally click Print on any webpage or anything.

    spoolsv.exe is a printer-related Windows file. It could be that Visual C++ or spoolsv was updated.
    You'll notice in Services the Print Spooler automatically starts with Windows.
    If the message appears again (if you retored the ISD startup to manual), update the Visual C++ Runtime Libraries.

    Thanks. I think I'll just leave the startup type set to disabled for now. I never use the printer anymore.
