I'm on a cyberhoteles.com internet terminal... and I just got this message:
"Sorry, Trial Period of this Software has Ended. Please Disable the Protection and re-boot (ALL WRITES TO THE HARDDRIVE WILL FAIL UNTIL THIS IS DONE!)?"

Looks like we're running XP on this machine, its got Yahoo Messenger, MSN messenger, IE and some sort of custom emailing software as well. Thats all I know about this thing. It doesn't have a start button either.

Anyway, I recon its a virus someone managed to get onto the machine, somehow. Don't ask me how though. The Please Disable the Protection (not naming any specific application name...) is what got me though, I recon its a virus.

    Any ideas?

Sounds more like they have some sort of write protection software installed to stop users from downloading and installing anything... bit like that DAMM Websentence ( Websense ) software we have in work!

and it was only a trial.. thats now come to an end?

Does the windows key work in bringing up a Start menu Goldy?

AND HEY shoudlnt you be chatting up sexy spanish senoritas rather than surfing the web??? ;) put the mouse down and get out in the sun!

LOL well, the spanish senoritas can wait, I'm catching up with me girl :p

Anyway, I thought maybe, but the ALL WRITES TO THE HARDDRIVE WILL FAIL part suggests that you wouldn't want that to happen.

From what I can see, what it does is create a new profile for every time you put money in, and deletes afterwards. Logical I guess...

As far as I can see, no filter. If there is one I havn't found it yet!

Windows key does nothing, nor does tab. its all very restricted.

Oh and there is this great thing for Linux called swapfs or somthing, where it emulates a hard drive, which you can save stuff on, and load from a CD. Basically means you can have a permenant file structure, and write to it at the same time. Very handy for Live CDs

I don't remember the name of it, but my school had something similar... they weren't incredibly intelligent though. First of all, you can still write/install to temp folders normally, as windows has to have it's temps. and secondly.... You, the user, could disable the program. no password. nothing. basically, it protected the computer from people who didn't know how to look in the taskbar....

I assume CTRL + ALT + DEL to bring up the task manager is also disabled, and I'm sure icons on the desktop that you can't right click and go into properties.
