Interesting rumor about WinNT/2k source-code leak

Neowin informs the source code of Windows NT and Windows 2000 has leaked to the web.
It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak .
And this leak could be a very big problem around the world.

This is a big shock for the wider IT industry. People could use the code to find exploids or figure out how those Operating Systems work and they maybe could get easily access to anyones PCs and networks.

Windows 2000 and NT is the most used operating system in offices, departments in the industry and gouverments around the world and this leak could be a big security risk.

Interesting, but I remember the rumor that Windows XP source code was leaked, when indeed it wasn't.

I guess time will tell

I just read on CNN

that indeed there is code out there, but it is onlya very small percentage out of millions of lines of code. M$oft is worried though that it could be a starting place

Microsoft have now released a official response:

Statement from Microsoft Regarding Illegal Posting of Windows Source Code

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 12, 2004 -- On Thursday, Microsoft became aware that portions of the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source code were illegally made available on the Internet. It’s illegal for third parties to post Microsoft source code, and we take such activity very seriously.

We are currently investigating these postings and are working with the appropriate law-enforcement authorities.

At this point it does not appear that this is the result of any breach of Microsoft’s corporate network or internal security.

At this time there is no known impact on customers. We will continue to monitor the situation.
