    Can anybody help please

I have a netgear router with two computers connect to it by cable and they work fine.
but my daughters laptop is connected by wireless using the wep security but the problem is that it will not re-connect every time when swithed on or when comming out of sleep mode.
the only cure I have found up to now is to switch the router off and back on again.

does anyone have an idea what the problem may be and how to solve it.

    Thank's

    Larry

Welcome to Major Geeks!! Larry, I believe that your problem is with the computer the fix is not to put that computer in to sleep mode some computers do this.;)

    Hi

Try in Device Manager to goto Network Adapters and double click the Wireless driver and choose Power Managment and then untick Allow the Computer to turn this device off to save power, do same with LAN/Ethernet to see if that helps.

What Windows version and service pack? be upto date with these as many updates have fixes for issues like this.

thanks for your ideas on the problem and I can understand how the computer going into sleep mode will shut down the connection. but I would have thought that it should re-connect automatically after comming out of sleep mode.
It also does not explain why the laptop when switched on will sometimes
connect to the network ok and then at other times it will not, even if it is within 3-4 feet of the router.
But then if I switch the router off then on again it will connect.

My brother has told me he had a belkin router which he had the same problem with but now uses a TP-Link router which now works fine.
it just seems a bit extreme having to buy a new router when there must be
away to cure it with different settings.

    Hi

Make sure your Windows Version is upto date with all service packs and if its XP then their was IIRC some fixes in SP2 for Wireless issues, think off hand that SP3 gained 1 fix for wireless.

Was an issue in XP SP1
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328647
Which is why I mention what Service Pack

Agreed Larry the quick fix is to buy new for most, however it doesnt mean the issue will be fixed and you have spent money with no results, far rather exhaust some other routes first, could well be router, so what model Netgear is it as their maybe a firmware fix or update for it.

Also their is this fix for WZC http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885293

If you can borrow a router to test that would be good as this will narrow the cause down to router, intermittent faults are a nightmare to track the cause to.

    Hi again

The router is Netgear WGT624 v3 and the laptop is running Vista home edition which is set to automatic updates.
