I am having a problem with my internet connection being inconsistent; it varies from normal to being extremely slow to completely dropping out. I have a 1.5 Mb DSL plan with Centurylink. I can do a wifi speed test with results of 68 ms ping, 1.4 Mbps download and upload of .24 Mbps. A few minutes later I might have no connection or a speed test of 215 ms ping, .52 Mbps download and upload of .22 Mbps.

It doesn't make a difference if I am on wifi or connected by the ethernet cable. I have used my older laptop with the same results.

I have a Netgear 6200 WiFi DSL Modem Router that is less than two years old. The four lights showing operation on the front of the modem always indicate that it is functioning properly. (Power, DSL, Internet and Wireless connections). I recently upgraded to the most recent firmwear and I have done a modem reset.

Is this most likely to be a bad modem, IP issue or a modem to ADSL connection issue? How can I determine which it is? CenturyLink says they do not have a problem with service and offer no help since I am not using a modem provided by them.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Check that your systems' network adapter drivers are up to date.

I do not have a home network set up, if that is what you are referring to. Just the Netgear 6200 WiFi DSL Modem Router and my laptop which is running Win 10. Older laptop is XP with same issues. I also connect an android phone by wifi which also has the intermittent no connection problem. We also use a Roku by wifi and it also has slow or no connection problems.

Correction: the OP has a Netgear model D6200. A 6200 is a router.

I think your dsl connection is too low for a Roku

I believe if you check CenturyLink's information for your speed tier, it will says speeds 'up to' 1.5Mbps. That covers anything slower than that. So your maximum is the minimum for a Roku device.

For the 3 other devices, it might be a) modem/router - least likeliest to be the problem b) distance from station c)copper wiring inside and/or outside your home.

You'd have to get someone to look at and test the house copper wiring.
