I replaced my cpu and added a stick of ram about a week ago, then formatted my hard drive. Ever since then my computer will shut down on its own, there is no pattern, can be doing something, or not. My comp recognized both the cpu and stick of ram. the other thing that happens when it shuts down, my outlook express will disappear from quick launch and be replaced with outlook. Any ideas on what to check? Appreciate any help.

Shutdown or reboot? did you use any gooey stuff on the CPU? did you replace the CPU fan? Sounds like a heat problem to me. Check to make sure your fan is seated properly, pull out the new ram and see if it keeps happening.

my cpu temp is 77 degrees C. fan speed is 3900rpm. Is that too hot?

That sounds like it's way too hot to me -- even for an Intel P4. Check your manual or Intel's website.

See what temps other users of your CPU are reporting here.

Fan speed (by itself) doesn't mean much. Some fans run fast (and noisy); others run slower. Even when they're moving the same amount of air. It depends how they're designed and how large they are.

Either you have a bad interface between your CPU die and your heatsink (no thermal paste?) or you don't have enough cooling capacity in the case. Or both.

Definitely way too hot, but it doesn't seem hot enough to be pushing the threshold. 2 questions for you,

    1) Where did you get the temp reading? Is this at boot up? God help you if it's at boot up....

    2) What are you normally doing task wise when the shutdowns happen?

If your idle temps are pushing mid to upper 70's you should definitely check that cpu out before it meltses. What cpu did you upgrade from, and like the other user asked , did you upgrade the heatsink and fan? And just out of curiousity, what type of case do you have and what type of power supply?

Thermal shutdown of a pentium is just over 80c. Your high temps, and high fan speed says you got something in the installation wrong. Did you put enough or too much past on the pentium? Did you wipe the old off before applying the new?

If you have the new socket 775, try wiggling the fastenings (what are those stupid things called). They must be rock solid, any movement in any way whatsoever, and it's not in properly. If you do have one move, then take it out and check the cheap plastic tips to see if they are bent.
